And unfortunately, with everything going on in our current world, this story just really brought us down. It’s a compelling, dark, and raw look at how much a person’s life can change due to unforeseen circumstances. Sixty-nine years old and finally sober, Cloud details for the first time the abusive childhood, complete with commitments to mental hospitals and electroshock treatments, that led to her life as a junkie lowlife and punching bag for trailer-trash men. Talk about some of the cultural highlights (and lowlights) that are woven into Fly Away—from the freewheeling sixties and the Vietnam War to the material-girl eighties up to the present day. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Then Margie started to encourage Dorothy to reach out to Tully, and she helped her through the mending of that relationship. The audio version, Libby via my public library, did not have the best narration, but the author’s suggestion of book club questions were insightful, and her encouragement of readers to get in touch with her shows she is very interested in connecting with her audience. Harriet Bloom – a prominent psychiatrist who appeared on Tully’s show many times; she is contacted by Dr. Instead of Bud’s tragic fate, the novel sees Kate diagnosed with terminal cancer, causing Tully to drop everything to reconcile with her best friend before she passes away. At long last, Dorothy must face her darkest fear: Only by revealing the ugly secrets of her past can she hope to become the mother her daughter needs. We all know how tough it can be to come home after years away, and that's what I found when I began Fly Away.

It became almost an addiction for Marah —the constant thinking about it, the little kit she had —it was intense. It was too sad, there was too much depression, and drugs, and cutting, and anxiety and it was just too much. Increasingly addicted to prescription sedatives and alcohol, Tully crashes her car and now hovers near death, attended by Kate's spirit, as the other characters gather to see what their shortsightedness has wrought. In the coma, Kate comes to her in a vision, and talks to her, reminds her of things Tully needed to hear. Prolific novelist Hannah revisits the characters, known to fans as “KateandTully,” of her bestselling Firefly Lane in this slow-paced but largely well-executed sequel. So, I think back to my late teen years and I remember the dumb decisions I made, like hanging out with people I didn’t know that well. In the beginning of this book, you have Kate reaching out to Tully to make amends for whatever caused a 2 year rift in their 3 decade old friendship. A tragedy will bring these three women together and set them on a poignant, powerful journey of redemption. Marge Mularkey – almost the same old Margie from Firefly Lane; although she is now a little quieter and has aged considerably due to her daughter Katie’s illness and death, she is still that rock for her family (and new friend Dorothy) through the difficult times; she recognizes that Tully is in trouble long before Tully does and tries to help, and she is a huge encouragement when Dorothy decides to care for her daughter while she’s in a coma. If you’ve gotten this far in my review, you can probably guess that I was not a fan of Fly Away at all.

Bloom’s office and gets to know better during teen group therapy; while he seems exciting at first and appears to really understand Marah and what she is dealing with, we recognize him for the mooching, controlling a-hole that he really is. Katherine Heigl (who also executive produces) recently told the Washington Post that she had her “fingers, toes, everything crossed” that the Netflix series gets renewed for further seasons. Tully reached out for him, pulling him close, but even as he kissed her and pressed his body into hers, she felt herself starting to cry, and when her tears started, there was no way to hold them back. Each has lost her way, and they will need each one another--and maybe a miracle--to transform their lives. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Although powerful, Cloud’s largely peripheral story deflects focus away from the main conflict, as if Hannah was loath to tackle the intractable thicket in which she mired her main characters. Unexpectedly, Cloud, who rebuffed Tully's every attempt to reconcile, also appears at her daughter's bedside. And what Marah must have been going through the entire year that Tully was in a coma —feeling so guilty for her role in what happened to her, especially seeing the magazine with the story open to the page in Tully’s apartment.According to Fly Away‘s synopsis, the second novel’s narrative follows Tully who wants to “fulfill her promise to Kate—to be there for Kate’s children, but it’s a promise she has no idea how to carry out. Tully had begun to plummet at her best friend's death and she hadn't been able to pull out of the dive. Her hard-drinking decline was triggered by Johnny’s anger at her for keeping Marah and Paxton’s liaison secret.
