Grid switch pattresses are another type not often seen in homes. These accept a number of accessories, which can be mixed at will in the one box. MK is known for its grid switch range, however they are also available from other manufacturers. Different ranges are not interchangeable. Screws holding plastic pattresses in place should be done up until the screwhead touches the pattress surface, and no more. Further tightening can break the brittle plastic. But suspended ceiling pattresses will. These squares of MDF are cut to match the size of a suspended ceiling tile. Cut a hole in the pattress to accept the light, then lay the pattress on top of the ceiling tile. Now, the pattress spreads the weight of the light, protecting the tile, and keeping your ceiling – and your ceiling lighting – looking better for longer.

Freestanding Baths Luxury freestanding baths have become the focal point of many a beautiful, traditional bathrooms. Many metal accessories for surface mounting are a different size to plastic pattresses. The screw spacing is the same, but the outer size isn't. These are an eyesore if one type is fitted to the other. Breakability can be reduced to some extent by mounting the pattress box on a piece of chipboard that's larger all round than the box. Chipboard and MDF are best as they're soft enough to reduce peak impact forces. It should be noted that metal conduit boxes use M4 mounting screws, but dry-lining BESA-style pattresses usually use M3.5 'faceplate' screws. This can cause difficulties when fixing surface-mount luminaires intended for flush conduit systems onto dry-lining pattresses, as the M3.5 screws slip through the screwholes in the luminaire. I assume they were fitted when the house was first electrified and the conduit was mostly laid on the surface rather than chased into the walls. This is far less destructive of course, but not really in keeping with the modern fashion for concealing such things. Mounting frames are now available with built-in neons. These light up to make finding the switch in the dark easy. For shades over 2kg you need to support the flex by using some lighting chain and therefore need a lampholder with a hook and shade rings to hang your light shade. Then choose between a Bayonet Cap version with shade rings for a shade with a 32mm -35mm hole or an Edison screw version with shade rings for a shade with a 38mm – 45mm aperture. Next you need a ceiling rose with a hook and again some earthed 3 core flex which goes between the lampholder and the ceiling hook. The chain you need is our large link chain. This is sold in max of 10m single length. If your drop is more than that, lengths of chain can be joined using an S hook. Max shade weight is 5kg using a single hook.
