In the real world in which we live air’s viscosity gradually dissipates, like friction, all air motion into heat. He became more interested in aerodynamics, won the Busk studentship in aeronautics in 1928 and moved to Brasenose College, Oxford where he received his DPhil in this area in 1935. New Zealanders like me have reason to be grateful to the performance of the Bristol Olympus engines fitted to the Avro Vulcan bomber; in appalling weather conditions the grand opening of Wellington Airport was marred by the early touchdown of the Vulcan, and the port undercarriage was broken off by contact with a wall. I. Taylor ranks at the very top — before Prandtl of Göttingen, von Kármán of Aachen or Southwell of Oxford. Ric is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute.

Spannend und dabei noch detailliert in die Entwicklung von Düsentriebwerken führt der Autor ein, eine oft amüsante Darstellung erwartet kaum jemand von einem Mathematiker. It took him three goes at setting the leg, extending over a week, and when he was finally finished, he showed me the X-ray, and there it was with all the jagged bones fitted together like a jig-saw puzzle. Back to Hooker’s youth; that examination was followed by three more years at school, and in 1926 Hooker went to Imperial College, London with what were, for those days, lucrative scholarships. From the early days of the engineering and the characters who drove the program on is a genuinely interesting history. I look at the individuals and the great pieces of technolgy which have inspired me though a long career. This enabled Sydney Camm to design the Harrier which demonstrated its outstanding capabilities in the Falklands war. However, after my evening meal, I cheered up a bit when it occurred to me that the only possible explanation must be that the powers that be were still debating my ultimate fate, and had not yet reached any conclusion about the job I was to do. The Merlin 61 arrived in time to give the Spitfire a desperately needed advantage in rate of climb and service ceiling over the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

In the late 1980s, test pilot Bill Bedford gave a talk in Christie’s auction room in South Kensington in London. These pressure increases have a significant effect upon the density of the air, and, hence, upon its flow pattern and the forces that the air exerts. I suppose this was my first tentative step in the direction of engineering, but, because of Levy’s influence in directing me towards hydrodynamics (the flow of fluids), I found that the most interesting part of the Aeronautics course was the aerodynamic flow of air around the wings of aircraft, thus producing the lift and the drag. Hooker was excited, and in turn brought Rolls-Royce chairman Ernest Hives to visit Rover's factory in Barnoldswick.Frameworks allow a Frameworker to build software products in a way similar to how IKEA allows me to build shelving units. To me, he seemed self-critical and full of praise for many of the people involved throughout his career.

He had lit up immediately, and, although the nurses rushed in, all he would say was ‘Don’t tell the doctor, please. This set off a major political row, and soon the MiG-15, powered by a Klimov VK-1 (a copy of the Nene), was outperforming anything America or Britain had to counter it.

In fact, the appreciation, liking and knowledge of aerodynamics which I gained at that time have been a great strength to me throughout my career, especially when I was moved into the field of gas turbines. I was instantly impressed by the aura of good humour yet relentless energy that seemed to surround him. On the screen behind him, towards the end of his talk, he showed a picture of Hooker, and said, "I'll have to think about this a bit, but if I was asked who was Britain's greatest ever engineer, I'd have to decide between Brunel and Sir Stanley Hooker, but I'd probably go for Sir Stanley. By equipping an Orpheus to bleed off air from the compressor and turbine, the thrust could be directed downwards, creating the Pegasus engine and leading to the Hawker Siddeley Harrier that used it.
