Perhaps they should read this book, read or watch Band of Brothers, maybe then they would realise what some are willing to do for others and perhaps try in some small way to emulate these Heroes this Band Of Brothers. Beyond Band of Brothers is an officer's look at the war, and a very competent officer he was! The prose is soldierly efficient. Winters lavishes praise upon the men he served with and only occasionally he is critical. You can tell how damn proud he was to serve with these men, even when he's not flat out telling you. While I also find this insensitive I believe it comes from being uneducated. These people probably have not suffered loss or experienced the crucible of war. It’s a dichotomy. Because although those of us who have served and lost don’t wish this experience upon others...this insensitivity is the consequence.

Our Band of Brothers® Tour is based on his book and the personal recollections of the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne who shared their stories with Stephen Ambrose and our historians. Rather than complaining that he was hit, he apologized, ‘I’m sorry, Lieutenant, I goofed. I goofed. I’m sorry.’ My God, it’s beautiful when you think of a guy so dedicated to his company that he apologizes for getting hit. Now, here was a soldier—hit by enemy fire in Normandy on D-Day, behind the German lines, and he is more upset that he had let his buddies down than he was concerned with his own injury.” Boys Will Be Boys? The plane’s landing lights came on as it approached the ground. It appeared they were going to make it, but the aircraft hit a hedgerow and exploded, instantly killing everyone on board. If I survived the jump, I would be the company commander.” AS A SMALL TOUR OPERATOR WE PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TIMING OF CASH INFLOWS AND OUTFLOWS, BECAUSE WE CAN’T AFFORD TO SEE OUR REPUTATION GET RUINED. For example, we carefully negotiate cancellation dates with our suppliers that fall later than cancellation dates with our customers. Thus, if we need to cancel a trip because we have not achieved the minimum number of participants, we can exit our supplier contracts with little liability. Before I dozed off, I did not forget to get on my knees and thank God for helping me to live through this day and to ask His help on D+1. I would live this war one day at a time, and I promised myself that if I survived, I would find a small farm somewhere in the Pennsylvania countryside and spend the remainder of my life in quiet and peace.” Winters' friend, the historian Stephen E. Ambrose wrote a great book about Easy Company's accomplishments. It takes a broad view of the war and the company as a whole. Then there are memoirs by other company members, such as non-commissioned officer Sergeant Donald G. Malarkey, which focuses much more on the men, their personalities and individual achievements. Winter's book is somewhere in between. Meehan remained in command of the company until the invasion of Normandy, when at about 1:15a.m. on June 6, 1944, D-Day, the C-47 Skytrain transporting the company Headquarters Section was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire, killing everyone on board. [2] :78–79 Winters jumped that night and landed safely near Sainte-Mère-Église. [2] :80 Losing his weapon during the drop, he nevertheless oriented himself, assembled several paratroopers, including members of the 82nd Airborne Division, and proceeded toward the unit's assigned objective near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. [5] :76 With Meehan's fate unknown, Winters became the de facto commanding officer (CO) of Easy Company, which he remained for the duration of the Normandy campaign. [5] :92

Its modesty, its candor, and its insights into the nature of front-line leadership and the fears and behaviors of men in combat make this memoir a classic ranking with Charles MacDonald's Company Commander.”—Dennis Showalter, author of Patton and Rommel

Winters's leadership inspired his soldiers to fight courageously under the most difficult and challenging conditions of battle. [An] extraordinary memoir.”—H.R. McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam In any event, it's a great read--miles above Ambrose's Band of Brothers book, which I think is a terrible book about a fascinating story. I love the miniseries Band of Brothers (I watch it at least once, if not twice, a year) and have really enjoyed the various memoirs produced by the members of Easy Company since Band of Brothers was released. In 2001, Winters, as a representative on behalf of the U.S. Army, was one of five World War II veterans to be awarded the Freedom Medal & Freedom from Fear Medal from the Roosevelt Institute.

On July 1, 1944, Winters was told that he had been promoted to captain. [2] :112 The next day, he was presented with the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) by Lieutenant General Omar Bradley, then the commander of the U.S. First Army. [2] :112 Shortly after, the 506th Parachute Infantry was withdrawn from France and returned to Aldbourne, England, for reorganization. [2] :112 The citation for his DSC reads as follows: Winters also attended the 54th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 22, 2002 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles when the Band of Brothers miniseries was nominated in multiple categories. When it won Outstanding Miniseries (one of seven wins), Winters spoke at co-creator and executive producer Steven Spielberg's invitation on behalf of Easy Company while other surviving members of the company watched from the Los Angeles St. Regis Hotel. In the wake of this incident, several of the company's non-commissioned officers (NCOs) delivered an ultimatum to the regimental commander, Colonel Sink, threatening to surrender their stripes unless Sobel was replaced. Winters tried unsuccessfully to talk them out of taking this step. [5] :53 Sink was not impressed by the threat, and several of the NCOs were subsequently demoted or transferred out of the company. Nevertheless, he realized that something had to be done and decided [5] :54 to transfer Sobel out of Easy Company, giving him command of a new parachute training school at Chilton Foliat. [2] :57 Winters' court-martial was set aside and he returned to Easy Company as leader of 1st Platoon. Winters later said he felt that despite his differences with Sobel, at least part of Easy Company's success had been due to Sobel's strenuous training and high expectations. [2] :287 In February 1944, First Lieutenant Thomas Meehan was given command of Easy Company. [2] :57 Summer 1944 [ edit ] The group's first four singles, "I Should Have Lied", "How Many Times", "Chain-Gang Smile" (produced by Don Was), and an early version of "Can You Keep a Secret?", were written by band members Eg White, and David Ben White in collaboration with Carl Fysh. The songs were also performed together by the band members, led by vocalist Nathan Moore. These early singles, released between 1986 and 1988, were minor chart successes in the UK Singles Chart. [2] Winters was discharged from the Army and became a production supervisor at a plastics adhesive business, Nixon Nitration Works in Raritan, New Jersey (now Edison). [2] :257 In 1951, he and his wife bought a small farm where later they built a home and raised two children. In 1972, Winters went into business for himself, starting his own company and selling animal feed products to farmers throughout Pennsylvania. [2] :257 Soon afterward, he moved his family to Hershey, Pennsylvania. [3] He retired in 1997, aged 79. [2] :258 On D-Day, Winters assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when its commander was killed and led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany—by which time each member had been wounded. Based on Winters’s wartime diary, Beyond Band of Brothers also includes his comrades’ untold stories. Virtually none of this material appeared in Stephen Ambrose’s Band of Brothers. Neither a protest against nor a glamorization of war, this is a moving memoir by the man who earned the love and respect of the men of Easy Company—and who is a hero to new generations worldwide.
