Description

Each project follows a pattern with a mitten, hat and scarf variation for a whole winter collection of accessories. Hilary also shares her inspiration behind the patterns, expert tips on finishing, as well as advice on colour and selecting yarns that enhance the lustre of the natural fibres, while inspirational photography provides a window on life at 59 North. Like most knitting pattern books, stitch explanations and abbreviations are included, along with pattern details and lovely photographs of finished projects. There are also helpful tips on washing and storing knitted items, protecting wool from moths, making pom-poms, and starting and finishing projects.

I dinged down one star for two reasons - the sweater sizes only go to a size Large and the shaping on some of the accessories could use tweaking. The mittens especially look too big and too short on the models, but with a few mods they would fit much better. I would extend the ribbing, draw it in some by dropping down a needle size or casting on fewer stitches. Several of the hats have no decreasing and are gathered at the top with a daisy chain run across the top of the fabric and pulled taut. That's a perfectly valid way to finish off a hat, but I would probably do a few rounds of decreasing to decrease bulk if I were to knit them, or leave the stitches live and draw the yarn through to finish instead of binding off first. Knitting from the North presents thirty patterns that offer a unique and contemporary twist on traditional stranded colorwork. Steeped in the knitting traditions of Orkney, Scotland, where Fair Isle knitting makes its home and where Nordic cultural influences are rich, Hilary Grant designs knitwear with a modern aesthetic inspired by the land and wild sea outside her studio window. From fingerless mitts to cowls, hats, and sweaters, the projects here offer original patterns in unique colorways for a fresh approach to knitting with color. The author makes it clear that she is not a "traditional knitter" in her opening paragraph. She borrows from across various influences and adds her own twists. These patterns have all been adapted to hand knitting from the author's machine knitting designs. I really enjoy the motifs on most of the patterns. The fair isle influences are definitely present. No skill levels are indicated, although the book does note when a pattern is easier or for beginners. I especially love the 'Loki' pattern, which is shown in a hat, scarf and sweater. Also, one of the models has beautiful hair just like Merida. The designs include solid color and patterned pieces, both simple to more intricate. There are a few patterns for making 'Cuffs' which I have not seen before. They are worn on your wrists, are very cute, and would help keep the blustery breeze from blowing up your sleeves. There are two sweater patterns; this book mainly features hats, scarves, gloves, mittens and the like.

In Knitting from the North, Hilary Grant – who lives in Orkney, at the very north of Scotland, closer to Norway than London – has translated her most popular patterns from her luxury Scottish knitwear range into 30 colourful hand-knitting projects – hats, mittens, scarves and jumpers – to keep your hands warm and spirits high. Simple, clean shapes ensure that pattern and colour are at the forefront, creating modern yet timeless designs. Punto nórdico : 30 modelos de gorros, guantes, bufandas y jerséis, Editorial GG/ Imprint GUSTAVO GILI EDITORIAL S.A, Oct 2019 This book is full of gorgeous knitwear photography and interesting color work patterns inspired by Nordic and Scottish knitting influences.
