As is common in dual timeline novels, the past is written in the past tense, and the present in the present, and that works well. I enjoyed reading about London itself and the memories I have as well of house sharing, meeting new people, the excitement of the city, but ultimately I found it too difficult to like.

She shows the life of a rock band as I imagine it can be – drugs, alcohol and all-nighters along with the constant touring and the elation of a crowd’s reaction. As someone who grew up surrounded by music and, with a brother who was steeped in the local band scene, I loved the attention to detail with all its rawness and grit. Like many of us traversing a once-in-a-century (hopefully) event that has rejigged our priorities, instigated a prolonged period of self-reflection and professional and personal re-evaluation, and prompted decisions that will change the course of our lives, MacManus is changing. While The Mess We're In did not quite reach the devastating emotional depths of Macmanus' debut, there was a deep undercurrent of pent-up emotion running through it, which made Orla's drinking and drug use feel like something she did to cope with things below the surface. I was first attracted by this book as I was about the same age as the character Orla in 2002, and did hang out with musicians, barmen.

Published by Wildfire under the presenter's full name, Mother Mother is due to launch in hardback in May next year and is billed as a “gritty coming of age novel” that tells the story of a young Belfast woman named Mary McConnell. The Mess We’re In is not always tidy – its dialogue could be crisper in places, and characters too often “deadpan” their lines – but it captures a time and a place with heart and irresistible momentum in prose that can be bracingly lyrical. Any aspects of the book that deal with mental health issues are also very over-simplified and unrealistic. She has written journals all her life, finding

we can feel mary's panic when she discovers her pregnancy, as she realises how different her life is about to become. Cleverly done giving the reader a more rounded view of Orla rather than just the relentless partying and sex showing that she has her own family problems and reasons for her behaviour. After becoming one of the BBC’s most successful, consistent and beloved radio broadcasters, she was leaving Radio 1 and pursuing other things. Radio 1's Soundsystem will move to occupy the slot on Saturday evenings, 11pm – 1am, while Radio 1's Residency will move to Thursdays 11 – 1pm. The setting and atmosphere was written well, but when it comes to relationships and characters I just didn't feel anything.

The station will also be bidding farewell to Diplo, who currently occupies 11pm – 1am on Saturday nights with Diplo and Friends. They discuss the similarities of the Nigerian and Irish immigrant experiences in the UK, and the impact of Gaelic on Annie’s writing; Annie’s rejection by 12 publishers before finding her editor for her debut novel Mother, Mother, and how she has begun to grow out of the ‘persona’ of Annie Mac.

Within the first few chapters, enough pills, tabs and cocaine are consumed to fuel a rave, enabling the housemates to overlook the black mould covering the kitchen and the mice nesting in cereal boxes – but their relationships with one another soon become equally messy.
