Description

It’s a simple variation on the established flip and twist screens, generally found on larger, SLR-style, cameras, but is cheaper to produce and more compact. Unfortunately it’s also more cumbersome. From the front and in terms of its overall specification, the new Samsung MV800 is very similar to the same company's ST95 model that we recently reviewed. Whereas that camera is firmly in the budget camp, the MV800 is much more of a mid-priced affair. So what could possibly account for the big price difference between the two? As with the SH100, image quality on the MV800 is generally pretty good. Of course, once you start examining images at 100% and the limitations of the small sensor do become apparent especially at higher sensitivity settings, but viewed at regular monitor sizes (or at smaller print sizes) the MV800 produces bright, natural looking images that we suspect the vast majority of users will be more than happy with. The LCD is one of the MV800's characteristic features: It's a 3-inch widescreen unit that can flip up and face forward. This so-called MultiView model builds on the (apparent) success of Samsung's DualView series, which feature front-facing as well as rear-facing LCDs to make self-portraiture more accurate.

The sensor output is rougher than its competitors' even at lower levels, and the noise reduction algorithm is too heavy-handed for our liking.comparison_bars title="Video Color Score Comparison", attribute="Video Color Score", xLabel="Video Color Score"}} Video Sharpness As a CCD-sensor based camera, the MV800 is a slow performer. There is a continuous drive mode, but no burst mode to speak of, not even at a reduced resolution. Speed was clearly not on the minds of Samsung's engineers when they designed this camera. Shot to Shot ({{product.raw_scores['Shot to Shot Score']}}) There are 7 ISO settings available on the Samsung MV800. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting. The menu system is one of the most interesting aspects of the MV800. Samsung is known more for its mobile phones than for its digital cameras, and their mobile phone (and tablet computer) user interfaces (UIs) are generally excellent. We've gotten the impression from previous Samsung digicams that the phone division has had a hand in designing camera UIs lately as well, which has resulted in some good-looking and high-functioning menu systems. The camera has a 16.1 megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens, which is a 35mm equivalent of 26 - 130mm. Videos are recorded in 720p HD with Zoom Noise Reduction and the camera takes MicroSD cards.

The device also provides the perfect picture in real time, with the easy-to-navigate Photo Editor function, allowing users to edit and rotate the image on the move. Loved ones and friends will also appreciate the Beauty Shot feature which edits out any imperfections, resulting in a flawless photo one can treasure and share forever.

The innovative 3.3-inch, 180-degree flip-out display on the MV900F helps shutterbugs easily capture and frame images from any angle, whether it’s a large group of friends or a full-body self-portrait. Additionally, taking self-portraits or group shots are easy thanks to Samsung’s unique Gesture Shot, which applies motion-sensing technology so that users can control the camera remotely using hand gestures alone. By simply making a circular hand motion, users can control the camera’s zoom functions. When the shot is properly framed, users move their hand up and down to snap the photo. With the MV800, the smartphone influence is more obvious than ever. Everything from the touch-based control to the "home" button to the app-like treatment of the shooting modes shouts "Samsung Galaxy." It's an interesting take, and one that could've bombed horribly; on a more serious camera, this would not work. But the MV800 is aimed squarely at casual users, the types of folks who have an iPod Touch but haven't heard of the Nikon D40. In that context, it's fine that the MV800 works more like a gadget than a camera. I mean if it is, f/6.3 at the long end is worse than f/24 on FF, i.e. will produce such a massive diffraction blur that the camera is very bad even in bright sunlight (not to mention the behavior of such sensors in dusk/indoors). For a 720p high-def shooter, the MV800's sharpness is acceptable. It's no surprise that it finishes behind both 1080p shooters in our comparison group, the ELPH 500 HS and category-leading Tryx, though it is sharper than the PL120. More on how we test video sharpness.
