The production translates well to the 4K Ultra HD disc from Lionsgate, but the lack of including the available Atmos track is perplexing. In the Lapland wilderness of 1944, prospector and Winter War veteran Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) finally made a successful gold strike. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word "sisu", this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. Those other films mentioned have wonderful character development, and a great narrative with layers of story to unpack.A gory grindhouse good time, Sisu should satisfy almost anybody who's wondered what it might look like if John Wick went up against Nazis. During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector crosses path with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. It's clear that John Wick and Inglorious Basterds were big influences in Sisu, but there's also a First Blood element to the film as well where a man minding his own business is forced to rage on in acts of brutality when provoked that is amped up to eleven due to PTSD. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back — even if it means killing every Nazi in his path. Droplets of blood and gooey parts of muscle, flesh, and bone are impressive when they are practical.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Jalmari Helander's Sisu (2023), starring Jorma Tommila, Jack Doolan, Aksel Hennie, Onni Tommila, and Mimosa Willamo. This is a wonderful-looking 4K picture, one that shines on the biggest screen imaginable with no video issues to speak of.The color palette does not ‘pop’ much given the muted look of the film, but some specular highlights standout a bit and the presentation of sunlight and so on has a natural brightness. The minimalist script and predictability of the film, which is segmented into chapters that telegraph what is to come, are boosted by the cinematography and the adrenalin fueled soundtrack. Helander made an imprint on audiences with his dark Christmas movie a few years ago that felt original and allowed for both the horror and family-friendly genres to coexist.
