Description

His most celebrated works include the ‘play for voices’ Under Milk Wood, and poems like Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night and Fern Hill. Thomas made regular tours of the United States, where he was a major influence on the Beat Generation. In Swansea the Dylan Thomas Centre has a permanent exhibition on the poet and hosts an annual festival, while the biennial Dylan Thomas Prize is awarded to a writer aged 39 or under – the age at which Thomas died. He is buried in the churchyard at Laugharne, where he spent his final years. Dylan Thomas is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and important welsh poets of all times, and this poem of his also uses symbols and images in a way that is quite impressive. This poem is definitely one of the better poems to come out of the repertoire of welsh poets, if not the best. Canadian O’Connor should rightly be described as an international poet, but as she has recently found her feet as a regular feature on the Cardiff scene, we hope she won’t mind being claimed as Welsh for the purposes of this article. Her work is complex, but strikingly modern, with aromas of Eliot and Pound, and is deeply coloured by her travels. She runs the Cardiff Poetry Experiment, publishes widely across the world (you can read two of her poems here) and as you can see form the video below, where she spars with one of Wales’ literary heavyweights, Peter Finch, she is a remarkable performer as well. One of Williams’ most famous Welsh language poems is ‘Cofio’ which he wrote in 1936 while visiting with a friend at his farm in Pembrokeshire. It was very popular at the time and was often recited at local Eisteddfodau, and is still a commonly studied poem in schools in Wales today.

Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Uplands, Swansea on October 27, 1914. His writing career began as a reporter for the South Wales Daily Post at just 16 years old, although he only lasted 18 months on the job. Despite only gaining recognition in the 1930, Williams still had some success with his Welsh language poetry much earlier. In 1922, at the age of 17, he submitted the poem 'Horeb, Mynydd Duw', meaning ‘Horeb, Mountain of God’, at the local Eisteddfod and won. Although, surprisingly, he never chose to formally publish the poem. While his work took many forms, from short stories, to radio broadcasts and more, he is best known for his contributions to poetry. But why would she save Hugh's proposal and give it to her granddaughter? You don't save love letters from someone you don't care about." Growing up, he received a bursary to study at the University College of North Wales, where he read Latin. Then, in 1936 he was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church in Wales.

In the first line, the rhyming and chiming between the weather and the writing suggests that even though the world sounds chaotic, its dissonances are part of arriving at a poetic truth. The consonantal repetition in the second and third lines are like the piano tuner’s obsessive intervals, moving closer and closer to making the instrument fit to play a beautiful lament. Nature and politics are part of the same song, only poetry can make it audible. It was hanging in a bedroom hallway in the house where I grew up," said Ms Schultz, 47, an art director. "I used to stare at it for hours. I was fascinated by it." Welsh poetics have an unlikely and prominent place in the modernist tradition. While he was a student in late-nineteenth-century Oxford, Gerard Manley Hopkins was in the habit of making word lists based on the same sounds. For example:
