Hand-in-hand with the explosion of craft gins and premium tonics over last few years, there has been a sharp rise in the use of creative gin garnishes. With gin brands and gin fans choosing to embellish their favourite tipple with everything from pink grapefruit to frozen asparagus tips (yes asparagus!) the days of the humble “ ice & slice” appear to be a distant memory. A brand new Premium Scottish Gin Producer based in Callendar, they have really set out to be authentic and different. Their Sweet Citrus Gin includes Grapefruit, Lime, Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass in its recipe, sounds like it will be distinctive and refreshing. In a traditional pot-still, the gorse loses a little of the coconut aroma but the process creates some incredible fresh-cut hay and caramelised toffee flavours. Like all good spirits, it’s about balance; one flavour shouldn’t overwhelm the rest – gorse petals provide a lovely sweet, round counterpoint to the juniper, orange citrus and spice in our gin. I’m really proud of the result.

After buying a copper still from Portugal, what was once a hobby has now evolved into a commercial venture, with their recent debut at the Taste of Grampian Food and Drink Exhibition being a breakthrough into the local Gin market. Early spring is a critical time for us as we work to tap trees when the sap is at its peak. This is something we have done for a few years now and we are always keen to ensure that we harvest the sap responsibly and sustainably. With so many silver birches to choose from, this is relatively simple! When it comes to accommodation in Scotland, there's a fantastic choice of amazing stays from luxury hotels to glamping getaways. Their Smoky Chilli Gin includes Bulgarian Juniper, Chipotle Chilli. Smoked Chilli, Chilli and Lime. This is quite an intriguing Gin; this is one of only two Scottish Gins that are made with chillis.

Of the future, Lynne says: “We are focusing on building our brand and making it easier for our customers to find our spirits on the shelf – whether they are in a shop, or in a bar. There is always some development work going on at the distillery so you never know when new products might start appearing… watch this space!”

A seemingly year-long flowering spiky plant, which has cursed many a golfer’s round, gorse almost goes unnoticed through its sheer ubiquitous presence in Scotland and across the globe. Anyone who’s ever walked a country lane or through the dunes on a warm late Spring evening will be familiar with the spray of bright yellow and the incredible aroma (a little reminiscent of Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil). For some the taste of citrus will emerge, for others maybe a hint of aniseed or cocoa. This 40% abv gin is full of surprises. Served with pink grapefruit it makes a delicious G&T. In a martini, the gin offers the perfect 007 moment. Scotland produces gin? That's right, Scotland doesn't just make the best whisky in the world, it's not bad at creating craft gins either.A family-run business led by husband & wife team, Steven & Lynne Duthie, Esker Spirits has evolved from a kitchen hobby, to distilling in the shed before, in April 2017, moving to premises in the beautiful Kincardine Estate on Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. And it’s here in Royal Deeside where the inspiration for Esker Spirits comes from – all the spirits contain the sap from silver birches which are everywhere around the distillery. Biggar Gin is one of my newer favourites and was the winner of the London Dry Category in the Gin Guide Gin Awards 2018. It’s a brilliantly versatile gin which is juniper forward but with both herbaceous and spiced characteristics. It makes a fabulous gin and tonic! Obviously, I have to mention the Negroni here! But I also like to try a martini, and sometimes you can’t beat a gin and tonic with a refreshing garnish (citrus or herbal). Nestled deep in the western Pentland Hills, Tarbraxus Distillers is home to the award-winning Pentland Hills Gin.

This tasty looking gin has just opened its doors. For many years there has been only one gin distillery on Orkney; at the end of this year we will have three. Aberdeenshire has a rich heritage that links the area with the tea trade. The Newburgh estuary, was once a thriving market place with tea being one of its biggest imports. Tiree is a fertile and remote island, famed for sunshine and stunning scenery, and is surrounded by the vast Atlantic Ocean. In the eighteenth century, the island was home to around fifty distillers with each farm on the island operating at least one still producing whisky.

Terms & Conditions

The Company’s original gin is distilled using nine botanicals, some of which are grown around the farm. Double distilled in a copper still called Amy, the gin offers a very smooth impression on first sipping. Tiree Whisky Company Ltd was established by locals Alain Campbell and Ian Smith with the aim of reviving the spirit industry on an island with a rich heritage in the tradition. Local production of Tyree Gin began in February 2019 and, once again, the island was home to an operational distillery - the first in 217 years.

The trend has become so popular, that nowadays serving gin with weird and wonderful fruits, herbs and spices has almost become the norm and with dedicated gin bars popping up all over the country, the varieties appear endless with little sign of slowing down.It seems like it does with Minus 33, who have concocted a solution to the high calorie content in flavoured gin. The answer is sugar- or rather NO sugar!
