Many people probably do not know that Britain has a number of settlements that have vanished , and Dr. Matthew Green's book explores several of the reasons why this has happened. Drowned. Buried by sand. Decimated by plague. Plunged off a cliff. This is the forgotten history of Britain’s lost cities, ghost towns and vanished villages: our shadowlands. Teeter on the brink of oblivion with historian Matthew Green as he introduces his new book, Shadowlands: A Journey Through Lost Britain. Hear the extraordinary stories of the spectral echoes, lost causes and dead ends of history that scar Britain’s landscape. These will include Dunwich, a medieval city plunged off the Suffolk coast; the lost Welsh city of Trellech, unearthed by moles; Skara Brae in Orkney, a neolithic village engulfed in sand; Wharram Percy, a village in North Yorkshire lost to the plague; Winchelsea in East Sussex, the medieval port twice destroyed by the sea; the abandoned Hebridean island of St Kilda; and Stanta, the Norfolk settlements lost to war games. I had previously written mainly about ‘lost London’ and wanted to advance to ‘Lost Britain’, exploring how our country has been shaped by absences, and how the great turning points of Britain’s history can also be, in some cases, mediums of oblivion. The project felt timely. With Brexit, Trump, coronavirus and now Putin, there was a sense that everything outside the window was melting down and changing form, and it was a time of great turmoil in my person life too, for which the ruins I encountered – the final grave in a coastal graveyard about to fall into the sea; ghost streets of once-bustling villages now pencilled into the grass; abandoned churches sheathed in barbed wire in territory commandeered by the military – proved strangely cathartic. As Green puts it near the end of the book: ‘Having toured and meditated upon so many ruins, I had somehow emerged less of a ruin myself.’ Skara Brae - about 5,000 years ago, possibly lost climate change with flooding of adjacent hunting grounds Travelling across Britain, Green transports the reader to these places as they teeter on the brink of oblivion, vividly capturing the sounds of the sea clawing away row upon row of houses, the taste of medieval wine, or the sights of puffin hunting on the tallest cliffs in the country.
