The solution to this problem is so simple. To deal with this, just make sure your thread is clean. When you remove the debris in the thread, this problem will go away. Unscrew it and clean the valve to make sure it is not dusty and that there is no sand caught in the threads. This is the number 1 reason why Boston valves lose air. When you’re ready to deflate your boat for transport or storage, remove the cap from the top of the Boston valves so any excess air can escape. What to do if a Boston valve loses air Boston valves have three components – 1) A base retaining ring (valve collar) that screws onto the kayak bladder receptacle/opening, 2) the valve body and 3) the valve cap. The base retaining ring serves the purpose of also keeping the fabric outer shell opening in position – if you did not have this, the bladder would fall inside the cover, making it difficult to access. Leafield Marine are constantly upgrading their air valve designs and they recently developed the D7 inflation and deflation valve and the A9 pressure valve. Each has an internal mesh filter and they’re great for paddle boards.

Many of today’s low pressure inflatable kayaks use Boston Valves on their bladders. Boston valves are very easy to use. Inflation valves are the “connections” on the kayak that allow air to be pumped into the kayak. The valve adaptor is the fitting that couples the pump hose to the inflation valve. The Boston valve is more common in inflatable boats and other larger inflatables–not so much in inflatable SUPs. However, it’s still good to know about it, as you might end up with an inflatable with this valve type, especially if you’re an avid SUP fan. Besides, most electric paddle board pumps come with a Boston valve adapter, so it doesn’t hurt to know. Other times, however, the thread gets damaged because of this debris. So even when you clean it out, it still leaks. If this happens, the best thing you can do is replace your Boston valve. How do You Replace a Boston Valve? There’s no need to fret because Boston valves are very common. That’s why most pumps will come with an adapter for this type of valve. So this isn’t something to be worried about. There are two standard Boston Valve sizes, a small and a normal one. The standard valve could be about 4cm on its diameter, while the smaller one could be less than 4cm. Your Boston valve would fit into the hole of your inflatable boat, bed, and any other item as it is standardized like most valves in the market. You will, therefore, not get one which is too small or too big for the pumping opening. The Bottom Line

This can be identified by looking for bubbles escaping from the inflatable kayak when you release air from the Boston valve. Apply soapy water around the valve to see if there is a leak. Take a heat sealer and seal all sides. This way, you can be sure that no water will get in. Step 6: Screw in Other Pieces While the Leafield valve is not very common in inflatable paddle boards, it has been around for quite some time and its quality is unmatched. You’ll find the Leafield valve in some inflatable kayaks, river rafts, paddle boards, and other inflatables. The base is the biggest piece. It’s the piece that holds the hole on the boat, letting air in and out. It is also the piece that connects the boat to the other two pieces. If I were you - again, this is only if I understood you properly - I would cut off the external thread and replace it with a Boston valve (see video on the article for tutorial). Trying to connect a BV to an external thread doesn’t sound like it will work. Also, you might want to read this article on how to find air leaks in inflatable boats. Boston valves sizes The best thing to do is to replace it. Unfortunately, Boston valves differ slightly from brand to brand. There is no universal size for all the parts. Simple. Unscrew the top cap to inflate the kayak. Unscrew the bottom of the valve from the base to deflate the kayak. How do you use a Boston valve? I also tried searching for an external-internal adapter - but only found for water pipes, not valves. You could try using these. However, I’ve never done anything like this, so I can’t assure you it will work.

If you install your Boston valve properly, you’ll never have to worry about leaks. If you don’t, or if your valve is old, this may become a problem. That’s why knowing what to do when your Boston valve is leaking is very important as well. Please take this advice with a grain of salt. It’s hard to judge when I’m not actually there. If you have a local boat “expert”, I highly recommend you take your buoy to him/her. With the adapter, you can use any pump you want. The adapter is the one that opens the middle piece and forces in the air. This way, it doesn’t matter if you have a manual or automatic pump, as long as you have the Boston adapter. The first thing to do is to identify why your valve is leaking. There are several things that cause these leaks, and they each have a different solution. So inspect your valve, find out what exactly is wrong before going to the solution. Also, if we’re being honest, manually inflating your paddle board can be quite the task, especially if you’ve carried your SUP some distance to get it to the water. Most of us would probably prefer to use an electric pump, given the choice.
