About this deal

When you are riding at speed you want to be sure that your brakes aren’t going to let you down and that a braking failure isn’t the penultimate experience of your life. I was told at the dealer parts counter that Volvo just buys brake fluid from whoever and re-brands it. That doesn't sound like they're importing the DOT 4+, made only by BASF in Europe. Glycol-ether (DOT 3, 4, and 5.1) brake fluids are hygroscopic (water absorbing), which means they absorb moisture from the atmosphere under normal humidity levels. Non-hygroscopic fluids (e.g. silicone/DOT 5 and mineral oil based formulations), are hydrophobic, and can maintain an acceptable boiling point over the fluid's service life. Ideally, silicone fluid should be used only to fill non-ABS systems that have not been previously filled with glycol based fluid. Any system that has used glycol-based fluid (DOT 3/4/5.1) will contain moisture; glycol fluid disperses the moisture throughout the system and contains corrosion inhibitors. Silicone fluid does not allow moisture to enter the system, but does not disperse any that is already there, either. A system filled from dry with silicone fluid does not require the fluid to be changed at intervals, only when the system has been disturbed for a component repair or renewal. The United States armed forces have standardised on silicone brake fluid since the 1990s. Silicone fluid is used extensively in cold climates, particularly in Russia and Finland.

Again, MB is not a manufacturer of most [if any] of these fluids. As specified in the MB Factory Approved Service Products: "Mercedes-Benz USA recommends the use of Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts, accessories and factory-approved service products explicitly approved by us for your vehicle model." There are three essential measures used to set a fluid’s final DOT rating that consumers should be aware of: The advantage of the Citroën LHM mineral oil based brake fluid is the absence of corrosion. Seals may wear out at high mileages but otherwise these systems have exceptional longevity. It cannot be used as a substitute without changing seals due to incompatibility with the rubber. [17] [ user-generated source] Compressibility [ edit ] Brake fluids must maintain a low level of compressibility, even with varying temperatures to accommodate different environmental conditions. This is important to ensure consistent brake pedal feel. As compressibility increases, more brake pedal travel is necessary for the same amount of brake caliper piston force.

The important thing is, you want a fluid that combines high minimum boiling point with low viscosity. The low viscosity is so your ABS/TRACS system works optimally. The difference between them is a specificed standard regarding the boiling temperature, which rises as the DOT number rises, and amount of water absorption. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) under FMVSS Standard No. 116 [5] defines grades DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5 and DOT 5.1, where DOT refers to the U.S. Department of Transportation. These are widely used in other countries. Their classifications broadly reflect the SAE's specifications, DOT 3 is equivalent to SAE J1703 and ISO class 3, DOT 4 to SAE J1704 and ISO class 4, etc. [6] Brake fluids must not corrode the metals used inside components such as calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinders and ABS control valves. They must also protect against corrosion as moisture enters the system. Additives (corrosion inhibitors) are added to the base fluid to accomplish this. Silicone is less corrosive to paintwork than glycol-ether based DOT fluids. [14] Most Brake fluids are manufactured to meet standards set by international, national, or local organizations or government agencies.

While a vehicle that uses DOT 3 may also use DOT 4 or 5.1 (a temperature upgrade) if the elastomers in the system accept the borate compounds that raise the boiling point, [ citation needed] a vehicle that requires DOT 4 might boil the brake fluid if a DOT 3 (a temperature downgrade) is used. Additionally, these polyglycol-ether-based fluids cannot be mixed with DOT 5.0, which is silicone based. I can see where the confusion is coming from. Amsoil's big claim to fame of exceeding all the specs of the brake fluid is right if the temperatures you are trying to beat are dry boiling temps. But ah lass, they are not. they are the wet boiling temps of the fluid.Hygroscopic brake fluids should be changed every 1-2yrs because of the increasing water content due to moisture absorption. As a rule of thumb, the higher the DOT number, the higher the absorption rate and therefore the more often the fluid needs to be changed. I'm not asking about DOT 5. I'm aware that DOT 5 is a silicon based fluid and it is not compatible with non-silicon based fluids. I understand DOT 5.1 is supposed to be a non-silicon based fluid with the same wet and dry boiling points as DOT 5. However, WRT DOT 4 Plus, if you google it, there are a number of references that imply it is another name for DOT 5.1, which is why I posted. MB states that the brake fluid for the ML should be DOT 4 Plus (not DOT 4), so I am wondering if anyone can point me to something "official" that indicates DOT 4 Plus and DOT 5.1 are in fact the same thing. The DOT number of a brake fluid will give you an idea of how the fluid will perform at the high temperatures generated by constant hard braking or in the most extreme climatic temperatures.
