Description

Professor Lip has significant engagement with industry, especially in areas related to AF and thrombosis, acting as steering committee or Chairman of multicentre, international studies. In addition, he has worked with translational scientists in new drug developments, leading to partnerships between academia (eg. Universities of Aston, Birmingham, Leeds etc). Some recent examples (selected) as follows: Lip GYH, Banerjee A, Boriani G, et al. Antithrombotic therapy for atrial fibrillation: CHEST guideline and expert panel report. Chest 2018;154:1121–201. Professor Lip was on the writing committee for various international guidelines, including the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Antithrombotic Therapy Guidelines for Atrial Fibrillation, as well as various guidelines and/or position statements from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) or EHRA. Specifically, he was also on the writing committees of the 2010 ESC Guidelines on Atrial Fibrillation, the 2012 ESC Focused Update Guidelines on Atrial Fibrillation, the 2012 ESC Guidelines on Heart Failure, and the 2014 NICE guidelines on AF. He was Deputy Editor (“content expert”) for the 9 th ACCP guidelines on antithrombotic therapy for AF (2012). European Societyof Cardiology and European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA): Chairman (2011-2015; and still remain on Executive Steering Committee, as ‘Past Chairman’ 2016-) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)EuroObservationalResearch Programme on Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF), definingthe epidemiology and management of AF in Europe. Part of a multinational expert research evaluation committee for Leuven University (2016). Regular evaluation for academic promotion applicantsfrom national/international universities [eg. Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Athens, Israel; Johns Hopkins Baltimore (USA), Singapore, etc (2012-)]. Part of international expert panel forHeart & Stroke Foundation Canada endowed Chair renewal committee (2015)

Guo Y, Lane DA, Chen Y, Lip GYH. Regular bleeding risk assessment associated with reduction in bleeding outcomes: the mAFA-II randomized trial. Am J Med 2020;133:1195–202.e2. Professor Lip, MD, is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham and is based in a busy city centre teaching hospital. He is also Adjunct Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences, Aalborg University, Denmark. Beyond stroke prevention, symptom management and control of cardiovascular risk factors are equally needed in AF. Indeed, multi-morbidity is common among AF patients and contributes to worse clinical outcomes and quality of life 31. Therefore, the importance and necessity of modifying cardiovascular risk factors is crucial, and this has demonstrated to decrease disease burden and progression 32. Integrated care, by putting the patient into the center and including other healthcare professionals, aids this objective 18, 33. Previous specialized AF clinics and nurse-led AF clinics have already included this approach with promising results 34, 35, 36. Limitations However, most of the studies regarding the ABC pathway were performed in DOAC-treated AF populations whereas VKAs are still widely used in several countries globally. In such patients, quality of anticoagulation and appropriate TTR is central. Recently, we have reported that the ABC pathway adherent patients had better TTR, and more ABC criteria fulfilled increased the probability of achieving good TTR 26. Thus, ABC pathway management is not only associated with a lower number of clinical outcomes but also results in better anticoagulation control, which in turn is associated with a better prognosis.

I relate to a letter in Soldier Magazine regarding entitlement to Get You Home (Travel) for a married accompanied soldier living in SFA who owns his own property elsewhere which is not rented. He questions whether or not he is entitled to GYH(T). The response stated that he was entitled to GYH(T) and prior to JPA should have been entitled to GYH(SA).Removed out of date forms and added: Allowances and Expenses arrangements during the COVID-19 Pandemic (amalgamated July 2021). If you are challenged, unless you are trying to pull a flanker, this amendment was articulated in a letter issued by DPS(A) 20 Dec 07 (May have been lost in the Christmas Post). The same letter also states that prior to the introduction of JPA Army and RN personnel married accompanied in SFA were entitled to GYH(SA) and the purpose of the ammendment was to extend the allowance to the RAF and re-instate it. Gallagher C, Hendriks JM, Nyfort-Hansen K, Sanders P, Lau DH. Integrated care for atrial fibrillation: the heart of the matter. Eur J Prev Cardiol. 2020. The simple, user-friendly HAS-BLED score, comprising risk factors either readily available from the clinical medical history or routinely tested in (new) patients, allows clinicians to formally assess bleeding risk, focusing on modifiable risk factors (optimising blood pressure control, removing concomitant anti-platelets, reducing alcohol intake, and optimising time in therapeutic range for those taking warfarin), and those who require regular review (patients at higher bleeding risk). The impact on implementing these risk scores into AF populations Europe-wide could potentially prevent >60000 major cardiovascular events & deaths each year amongst AF patients with a CHA 2DS 2-VASc ≥2 ( Thromb Haemost 2013;109:328).Guo Y, Wang H, Zhang H, et al. We have heard rumours that electric vehicles will receive a higher rate however currently, this is purely hearsay. Professor Lip has had a major interest into the epidemiology of atrial fibrillation (AF), as well as the pathophysiology of thromboembolism in this arrhythmia. Furthermore, he has been researching stroke and bleeding risk factors, and improvements in clinical risk stratification. The CHA 2DS 2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores - for assessing stroke and bleeding risk, respectively – were first proposed and independently validated following his research, and are now incorporated into international guidelines.
