In Britain Nymphalis antiopa goes by the common name of Camberwell Beauty, named after the location of its first recorded sighting in England in 1748. The film is about the lead singer in a punk band, 'Camberwell Beauty', who undergoes plastic surgery to reconstruct her face after a motorbike accident, but is horrified to discover that she is now beautiful. We have a few specimens of this species in our collection, most of which are from the D H Walker entomology collection. high, of an oblong form, and having, as a rule, eight, but occasionally nine, longitudinal keels, commencing below the summit and rising prominently; they then gradually decrease in height and disappear before reaching the base.
This butterfly spent two days in a garden in Almondbury near Huddersfield during the "invasion" year of 1995. A large number of food-plant plants was recorded, such as willow ( Salix nigra, Salix pentandra, Salix caprea, Salix aurita, Salix cinerea, Salix phylicifolia), American elm, hackberry, hawthorn, wild rose, Betula species ( Betula verrucosa, Betula chinensis), Alnus incana and poplar. The larvae are gregarious nearly until pupation when they are most handsome with long branched spines and wonderful contrasting red blotches on the black ground colour. The Camberwell Beauty has never been recorded breeding in the UK, but is a vagrant species, with at least a few individuals spotted most years. They then overwinter, and then restart their mating cycle throughout the spring, from April through June.
This species is a rare migrant to the UK but like all of our migrant butterflies, occasional large influx years do occur. A powerful flier, this species is sometimes found in areas far from its usual range during migration. Welcome to BirdForum, the internet's largest birding community with thousands of members from all over the world. Both families have nannies and the children (two of each for each couple, there’s a surprise) attend private schools. After a period on the wing adults go into hibernation using a wide range of hiding places, from tree hollows to drainage pipes and garden sheds.

The Aurelian by Moses Harris, published in 1766, gives this butterfly the name "The Grand Surprize" or "Camberwell Beauty", based on 2 individuals that were caught in Cold Arbour Lane near Camberwell in 1748.s: Several hundred Camberwell beauty were released at Brandon Marsh, Coventry as part of a publicity stunt for paper merchants Samuel Jones. There were moments of almost hysterical laughter and then moments of shock, a bit like seeing an accident and not wanting to look. Compelling to read, but most of the characters are quite awful people, perhaps a sign of our society . They tend to be a tan or brown gray, with two rows of sharp, red-tipped spikes protruding from the ventro-lateral side of the pupae. However, there is little doubt today that most Camberwell Beauties which manage to reach Yorkshire have flown across the North Sea using their own efforts coupled with favourable winds and weather conditions.
Set at the beginning of the new century, in South London, the cast feel totally real, the neighbours ring rousingly true. They all do precisely the same, and at once congregate, forming a colony on the last cluster of leaves, covering the bases with web, on which they live and feed in company. Directly after moulting the head is ochreous, but in a very short time turns jet-black and shining; also there are ochreous dorsal markings which soon change to dull brown. During the demolition of the factory in 1982, the mosaic was saved and can now be seen on the side of Lynn AC Boxing Club building (formerly a public library and baths) on Wells Way, Camberwell, London. Life for the Camberwell couples is turned upside down after a spectacular `scales falling from eyes' situation. It is thought that butterflies fresh from hibernation do not migrate and hence the assumption is that spring sightings in the British Isles are of individuals which arrived the previous year and successfully hibernated in this country.
