Description

The sweet lil’ fishergirl possessed by the Patron of Assassins and then slipped into the Bridgeburners as their creepy-arsed new recruit? Mappo reveals to Fiddler that he and Icarium have found carvings in Pust’s temple that resemble the Deck of Dragons, but with ancient Holds rather than modern Houses, and suspect that the shapeshifters’ Path of Hands may end at the temple itself and that Pust hopes that he and Icarium will defend it. Erikson didn’t hold back with his punches, and I envisioned any newcomer to this book will definitely feel heart-wrenched and mesmerized.

Meanwhile, Coltaine, the charismatic commander of the Malaz 7th Army, will lead his battered, war-weary troops in a last, valient running battle to save the lives of thirty thousand refugees and, in so doing, secure an illustrious place in the Empire's chequered history.Felisin dons Sha’ik's clothing and, using something of the goddess's power, she reads the thoughts of the High Mages: Bidithal abused Sha’ik as a child, Febryl tried to poison her thrice, and L’oric is an enigma, but all kneel before her with the crowd in the end.

Icarium senses his hesitation and tells Mappo he would die for him, and Mappo tells Icarium the truth about the First Empire city. Coltaine defeats the rebel army of Hissar, the city where he takes command of the 7th, and begins the march to Aren, which comes to be known as the Chain of Dogs. Deadhouse Gates draws our attention across the sea, to the continent of Seven Cities – which was strongly hinted at throughout GotM as being on the cusp of rebellion. Infatuated with his own talents even more than he is with Lostara’s, erm, talents, Pearl is the very personification of hubris, and believes himself to be the exception to that old adage about pride and falling.

This legendary march becomes known as the Chain of Dogs and will become part of the legends of Seven Cities. This is my first Malazan audiobook and while some of the voices are okay, he sounded like a whiney brat, which is super offputting for what is supposed to be one of the greatest rulers in history so far as I can tell. Set in a brilliantly-realized world ravaged by anarchy and dark, uncontrollable magic, Deadhouse Gates is the thrilling, brutal second chapter in the Malazan Book of the Fallen. However, Duiker wrote a few naughty things which were considered seditious by those in authority at the time, and now he finds his old creaky arsebones battered day after day on horseback as part of a fleeing army on a sand-blasted continent. Hated by their countrymen (who revile them as ‘Malazan lapdogs’) and mistrusted by their new comrades, it’s no wonder they’re all so bloody angry.

Thanks also to Stephen and Ross Donaldson for their kind words, James Barclay, Sean Russell, and Ariel. Cowardly, greedy, selfish – Pormqual is in no way qualified for the role of Fist, either in the military sense or just the ‘ruling a city without everything going tits-up’ sense. His characterization is brilliant, and he has created people you cheer for (who wouldn’t follow Coltaine?
