Another variable in coincidences is similarity: the two or more events making up a coincidence must be similar. In the Allen Falby example, both events involve a tourniquet on the leg saving the life of a man bleeding to death. That in itself is not a coincidence, but the fact the two men happen to save each other’s lives years apart without knowing or being involved with one another--and each showing up at the right place and time to save the other person’s life--is what makes it a coincidence. Spiegelhalter collects anecdotes of coincidences. In fact, he’s accumulated more than 5,000 stories since 2012 as part of an ongoing project. In 2016, an independent data firm analyzed these stories and revealed 28 percent of them involve dates and numbers. But no matter what the nature of a coincidence is, Spiegelhalter claims coincidences are in the eye of the beholder.

The 1969 film Z, which is based on the military dictatorship ruling Greece at that time, has this notice: "Any resemblance to actual events, to persons living or dead, is not the result of chance. It is DELIBERATE." [7] Pay attention. Coincidences happen to people who are mindful and notice things. When you go about your daily activities, keep your senses open to coincidental opportunities. The uncanny, then, is just the right hemisphere's way of violently . capturing our attention. Of course, recent evidence suggests that the right brain-left brain dichitomy is not as absolute as once believed; Honegger's model is only the latest, not the last, word on this subject. But 1 isn’t 10, and 143 could, with my logic, mean other things, like “I hate you.” “And that’s the predisposition of those who want to see a coincidence,” Beitman says. “The brain sees a pattern that does not exist.” Cultivating Coincidence Whereas Kammerer hypothesised impersonal, acausal factors intersecting with the causal nexus of the universe, Jung’s acausal connecting principle was enmeshed with the psyche, specifically with the archetypes of the collective unconscious. Jung’s archetypes are primordial structures of the mind common to all human beings. Resurrecting an ancient term, he envisioned an unus mundus, a unitary or one world, in which the mental and physical are integrated, and where the archetypes are instrumental in shaping both mind and matter. It’s a bold vision, but where, we are bound to ask, is the evidence for any of this? There is more than a grain of plausibility in the suggestion that archetypal structures have an influence in shaping thought and behaviour. But the entire universe? Pauli aside, the idea of synchronicity received little support from the wider scientific community.

South Park, which frequently features well-known public figures or parodies of them, always opens with a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer that begins by stating, "All characters and events in this show—even those based on real people—are entirely fictional. All celebrity voices are impersonated... poorly. The following program contains coarse language and due to its content it should not be viewed by anyone." I wish I'd known this centered around Joyce's Finnegans Wake so much before going in, as I would have read it beforehand. As it stands, I'll be returning to this book upon reading that one; such is the charismatic, intellectual power of this book. At times as absurd as it is prophetic, it encapsulates on many of the liberties of the counterculture movement to provide a truly mind-boggling exploration of synchronicity. One day, I hope to rival it - God knows I have the materials, already. Another stellar book from Robert: I may bump it up upon re-read, we will see. Although the disclaimer is routinely included as boilerplate, producers sometimes vary from it, sometimes to make a statement about the veracity of their work, for humor, or to satirize the standard disclaimer. But it’s not only recognizing the pattern that makes a coincidence. It’s also the meaning we ascribe to it — especially meaning that provides solace or clarification. So when we see an unusual configuration, we think it must hold some significance, that it must be special. Yet most statisticians argue that unlikely occurrences happen frequently because there are so many opportunities for surprising events to happen. “It’s chance,” says David Spiegelhalter, a risk researcher at the University of Cambridge.

Again, I NEED to return to this book upon reading Finnegans Wake. I have some other Joyce books lined up for me, as I never realised how alike we are in sombunall ways. Either way, I yelled, "YES!" when Wilson said Joyce's 'W' denoted a particle aspect and also means 'Mountain' in Chinese - as that's the second thing I thought upon seeing the article, itself (namely due to my recent reading of 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei which defined that character among others). The first thing I thought, upon seeing it, was the symbol for PSI [Ψ] which has been repurposed to mean Wave Function Ψ in Quantum Mechanical terms. How interesting a coincidence; slightly frustrating that △ is used by Joyce, instead, to stand for the wave aspect of matter, though. I do not, however, propose either massacres or expulsions. Such dreadful things have no place in the enlightened mind. No, do not assassinate at all, do not expel at all...Let us reserve the employment of force for the idols; ridicule alone will suffice for those who serve them.” --Marquis de Sade Kammerer’s book Das Gesetz der Serie (1919), or The Law of Seriality, contains 100 samples of coincidences that he classifies in terms of typology, morphology, power and so on, with, as Koestler puts it, “the meticulousness of a zoologist devoted to taxonomy”. Kammerer’s big idea is that, alongside causality, there is an acausal principle at work in the universe, which, as Koestler puts it, “acts selectively to bring similar configurations together in space and time ”. Kammerer sums things up as follows: “We thus arrive at the image of a world-mosaic or cosmic kaleidoscope, which, in spite of constant shufflings and rearrangements, also takes care of bringing like and like together.” Albert Einstein, for one, took Kammerer seriously, describing his book as “original and by no means absurd”. In the 1966 film Thunderbirds Are Go, set in the year 2068, a disclaimer states: "None of the characters appearing in this photoplay intentionally resemble any persons living or dead… SINCE THEY DO NOT YET EXIST".

Agatha Christie Quotes (Author of And Then There Were None) Agatha Christie Quotes (Author of And Then There Were None)

Robert Anton Wilson became, at various times, an American novelist, essayist, philosopher, polymath, psychonaut, futurist, libertarian and self-described agnostic mystic. Recognized as an Episkopos, Pope, and Saint of Discordianism by Discordians who care to label him as such, Wilson helped publicize the group/religion/melee through his writings, interviews, and strolls. So then, what is a coincidence? We actually know very little about what they are. That reality is best illustrated by the dictionary definition, which states that a coincidence is the remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection. Why is it remarkable? Because they occur at the same time? Because their concurrence is surprising? Because there is no apparent cause though it seems there should be one? And left unsaid in that definition is the suggestion that the coincidence may have meaning. This article needs additional citations for verification. Yeats's great poem on the 1916 Irish rebellion contains the line, "A terrible beauty is born." Stress "terrible" when reading it aloud; then stress "beauty." Which meaning did Yeats intend? Or did he intend both? Coincidence Series in Order by Jessica Sorensen - FictionDB

Not much else was said about the novel, but CD Projekt Red did confirm that a Polish version would also be released. The book's front cover was also revealed, appearing to show two versions of the same character holding the throat of a cyborg-looking person. The researchers also looked at the tone of the stories and found that more people described their coincidences using negative language (32 percent) or neutral language (41 percent) than positive language (25 percent). This finding is unexpected because coincidences are generally considered to be positive experiences. Maybe it’s because people seeking meaning are more likely to experience coincidences, and that often happens in times of distress.9 When experiencing a coincidence, the coincider, the person experiencing a coincidence, often asks, “What does this mean?” Within this question are embedded two different questions. One question is “How did this happen?” The answer becomes an explanation. The other question is “What does this mean for me?” This answer becomes possible guidance for how to use the coincidence. (The ranges of explanations and uses are described later in this book.)

Sounds remarkably like the Urizenic hemispheral disconnect denoted by John Higgs in his book Blake vs The World which I've just finished reading. All of my reading is synchronised by this point. A classic example: In a room of 23 people, there’s just over a 50/50 chance two of them will share a birthday. Most of us would view that as an inexplicable coincidence, but mathematical law suggests such events are random and bound to happen. Any meaning we attribute to them is all in our heads. Cyberpunk 2077 has had a resurgence recently following its fairly disastrous launch, and CD Projekt Red is now doubling down on its reach both within and outside of games.
