Description

There is a twist at the end and ending itself is rather uplifting (As uplifting as grim darkness of the far future can be) if bittersweet, which makes it all worth it in the end but this was the main reason this book got a four instead of five. It seems like Angels of Caliban is meant to conclude the Imperium Secundus arc. Sadly, it doesn't feel that way. Vulkan Lives, The Unremembered Empire, Deathfire, Pharos, and Angels of Caliban don't feel tight in the way Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames did. And that's my main problem w The story continues in Fallen Angels, where the Lion, Nemiel and remaining Dark Angels continue to prosecute the Great Crusade until the virus bombing of Isstvan III by Horus alerts the Primarch to the treachery of the Warmaster. On the world of Diamat a task force battles with traitors for possession of powerful siege weapons the Sons of Horus intend to use against loyalist forces sent against them.

There’s some thrilling bolter porn for the action junkies but like ANGELS OF DARKNESS, this novel is a much more considerate and thoughtful read. The interactions between the characters, especially the interactions between the primarchs, make for a memorable read. The conflict between Lion and Roboute Guilliman as Lion exerts his authority as Lord Protector of Imperium Secundus is great. As mentioned earlier Lion El’Jonson really can be a bully and while I can’t agree with his methods I find it easy to appreciate him as a character. In contrast to the practicality of Lion, Roboute comes across as naive. They pose a good foil for each other and it’s a shame that their brother Sanguinius has had so little to do in the Imperium Secundus subplot. Sanguinius shows up at the very end of THE UNREMEMBERED EMPIRE and is crowned emperor. Then there’s a brief bit in PHAROS where he’s nearly assassinated and in ANGELS OF CALIBAN he’s too preoccupied with his visions of the future to do much more than intervene when Lion and Roboute come to a an impasse. Otherwise Sanguinius is pretty inconsequential to the whole arc. Meanwhile on Caliban treason and dissension boil over in what will become the defining feature of the Legion's history. This story shares equal billing with the Lion and is again quite well handled with a fascinating cast of quite unlikable characters. The Dark Angels are about to arrive to The Horus Heresy: Legions! Read on to learn about them and which other new factions will be part of the ‘Angels of Caliban’ expansion, starting on October 23rd! The Dark Angels

Relato del idiota Astelan, de la legión traidora de ángeles oscuros y su el peor y el más inútil primarca de la historia de la humanidad. A mutter from Luther drew Typhon’s attention away from the Lion. The commander of the Dark Angels contingent was staring at his master as though a revenant stalked the corridor. In slavery, Caliban came to view Prospero as an usurper and grew to resent him and his daughter. He sought to rebel against them under a new master, but in the end he remained a faithful servant to his first master, Prospero. This character arc has notable similarities to those of the Dark Angels' Primarch Lion El'Jonson and Luther. All of this leads to what I consider the best part of the novel but be warned, spoilers follow so you might want to skip the next paragraph… The eBook edition includes integrated illustrations of characters and events from the story, and an afterword that places the story in context within the series. The nobility of Caliban were a brusque and pugnacious class. Raised from childhood to live and die by the sword, they were great warriors known for their courage in facing the Great Beasts and other dangers of the Calibanite forests. The Lord High Exacter, the leader of the Saroshi bureaucracy, denounced Jonson and the Emperor to the primarch's face aboard the Dark Angels' flagship Invincible Reason, and Lion El'Jonson responded by ramming his Power Sword through the fanatical Saroshi leader's body. After the end of the Horus Heresy during the Siege of Terra, Lion El'Jonson and the Dark Angels fleet finally returned to Caliban, but once the I Legion's vessels made orbit they were immediately fired upon by Caliban's orbital defence system.
