Description

The novel opens with the attack on Donald Ellis, while he is drugged during the encounter it is still horrific to read and the way he was dumped to be found was heart-breaking. Amber hyped up the story being about a female serial rapist but she’s honestly more of a serial torturer but definitely sexually motivated.

After being released from the hospital, Donald is trying to come to terms with the way his life is going to be now and he is struggling. Additionally, the way it's written is meant to evoke the feeling, at times, of what it is to be a survivor of sexual assault in all its different forms. Funny enough, the complaint we hear the most from men these days is that they don’t “feel safe” approaching a woman to flirt anymore. Being a woman has traditionally meant demonstrating the right sort of emotions: smiling on demand, being polite, internalising your anger Lately, however, the anger has been uncorked. What I do know is that one of the most fundamental differences between men and women is that one can easily hurt or kill the other with just their bare hands. If you’ve got a strong stomach or no triggers then I’d recommend picking this up but it’s the darkest kind of fiction you could possibly pick up.

Sadly I think a lot of interesting elements in this story go unexplored and I think the book lost some impact to its writing style and should have been quite a lot longer. It is abstract in its prose, but it's in this abstract style that you are hit with so much raw, unflinching emotion that it becomes impossible to look away. I do like that I was brought up in Christian beliefs and going to church and reading the bible because it’s come in handy when getting into debates with Christians about LGBT+ rights. I did enjoy the Twitter section - I think this was a good way of showing how violence like this is glamorized and portrayed in the media, and which sensationalized stories truly garner the public’s attention. It lost me in the first few pages at "A bird the size of the memory of a bird passes over like a spider falling perpendicularly," but I forged on for a while to see if it could engage me. I would be remiss if I didn't make it very clear to other readers that this book, while extremely well done and purposeful, is also very in your face with the many facets of sexual assault.

I shouldn't make a scene, I was blowing it out of proportion, this wasn't a big deal, he wasn't hurting me, I'd be able to get off the bus soon, it was my fault, I shouldn't have worn a dress to work that day, what would I even tell a cop? It’s a blistering criticism, as is the use of the men, especially Donald, the first victim, who agrees to be interviewed in hopes of helping other men, and the hideous way his vulnerability is trampled in the public arena.
