About this deal

Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had.

Meanwhile, the father figure remains irritatingly obtuse and the couple aids and abets their disturbed child with a total lack of discipline, absurd risk-taking, and denial of the obvious. Estranged from her own mother, Suzette is determined to raise her beautiful daughter with the love, care, and support she was denied.Author Zoje Stage has created a book that is terrifying not because of some unfamiliar monster, but because it’s a deeply familiar reflection of parenthood in America. This dark, terrifying novel unfolds as a battle of wits between a struggling mother and her psychotic young daughter—and its genius is that the reader’s allegiance isn’t allowed to linger too long on either side.

A poetic study in passion that uses the tropes of vampire fiction to explore queer identity and desire. Soon, Suzette starts to fear that maybe their supposedly innocent baby girl may have a truly sinister agenda. If you're looking for something to really keep you in suspense and give you the creeps, this isn't it. I get that the it was an important part of her childhood and shaped the life she lives, but reading about her troubles with it every few pages was so tedious and boring! But after Imogen survives a traumatic attack, Beck suggests they all reunite to hike deep into the Grand Canyon’s backcountry. She was adopted as a small child and has only the barest memories of her mother, but the seed she carries sprouted nonetheless. Not that all medication is toxic, but like you said, society's so quick to find a pill for something, never mind the side effects.

If it wasn't for her inconsolable fear of losing so much small intestine that she'd lose the inalienable right to shit on a toilet like a normal person. Suzette questioning everything, Hannah escalating her schemes and thwarting all the adults around her, even the schools designed to deal with, ahem “special” children. It made the tender part in her abdomen twist and squeal in protest and she fanned her fingers, trying to make herself relax. This book is heady, it pulls you into it, capturing so beautifully love and longing, particularly between women. Hanna has been expelled from three preschools and two kindergartens for bad behavior, forcing Suzette to home-school her—an arrangement that further strains their fraught relationship.

The main characters are all well developed, and at various parts of the book you really care and sympathize with all of them.
