I think the choice to begin this story with an almost naive point of view is a great decision, mostly for the reader’s benefit. But as with all rules, there are times Everytime Atl mentioned a different kind of vampire, or a new power, or the history of her people I perked right up.

Her plan doesn't include Domingo, but little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his undeniable charm.

One of my favorite books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and one of my all-time favorite horror books… Certain Dark Things will make you think about vampires in a whole new way. Most definitely a fresh take on vampire novels, with excellent world-building (and vampire lore-building), a fascinating mix of different types of vampires, from terrifying to beautiful to nasty-gross to sexy, all with a gritty noir feel. Lovers of Vampire lore will notice the little nod’s to tales of old, but she manages to make Certain Dark Things and the Vampires that inherit it completely her own. Then again, the beginning of the book was almost only exposition, mostly Atl explaining the world of vampires to Domingo, and the plot itself is super thin as it is.

A total side note but reading this book gave me a lot of the vibes I got when I first read one of my favourite books, Lost Souls by Poppy Z.Headlines link vampires to the drug war, but Atl’s hunger for blood is tied to her survival, not to addiction. Moreno-Garcia uses folklore/mythology reference to give us the understanding of why each vampire race is different than the rest, and has an epic glossary at the back with a more detailed description of each type of Vampire and the historical reference’s she drew from for them. Oh what a cool book this could have been if the many cool ideas it contains had been spun a little further, if there had been a little more plot and substance, a little more depth to the characters.
