About this deal

THE DUNCTON CHRONICLES This series of six novels was published over thirteen years, starting with Duncton Wood in 1980. While it is perhaps obvious that this was Horwood's first novel, it is still undoubtedly a master peace and one which is only enriched and enlivened by the rest of the series.

I find Bracken a bit wishy-washy and whiny to start, and then slightly dense in the middle, and then hard to idenitfy with at the end. I first read it aged 12, and some of the violence and sexual references went over my head at the time. Susan Kirsopp from Northumberland I read the first one Duncton Wood a few years ago and found it fascinating I like many others I could not believe how I was drawn into the lives of moles. As the tagline on the book suggests, this is "A clash of good and evil in the savage kingdom of moles.Darker and Edgier: While Duncton Wood had its share of of horror, Duncton Quest brings it up to eleven with the Disciples of The Word's massacre of the Uffington scribemoles. They were shipped from England, where they were published; the pages all brown and yellow, obviously original paperback releases.

For me, Horwood has got the combination of animals and fantasy and faith and countryside just right.

One instance in particular between Rune and Rebecca is almost obscene and made very, very difficult reading.
