Description

Well, The Grey Lantern is like a comic-book hero – the album is about this village of people with really disgusting morals and the Grey Lantern sorts them out. We originally recorded this song with a hip hop groove and some exceptional swearing that was rejected by the record company, these versions appear on the outtakes disc of the box set and its really interesting to hear these early versions and how we finally arrived at the finished version of this song that closed the album. Mansun are regarded as one of the most innovative British bands of the late 1990s and released three classic albums - Attack Of The Grey Lantern (1997), Six (1998), Little Kix (2000) - a retrospective compilation Kleptomania and a popular series of EPs during its existence.

Throughout the album, the hero encounters a number of immoral inhabitants in a fictional English village. Attack of the Grey Lantern is the debut album by English alternative rock band Mansun released on 17 February 1997 via Parlophone.

The following three singles ("Stripper Vicar", " Wide Open Space", " She Makes My Nose Bleed") all made the top forty each improving of the previous singles' chart position. The Kscope label has acquired the band's impressive catalogue and are creating a deluxe reissue series that delves into a treasure trove of previously unreleased audio and visual material. This song leaves you with the sentiment of not taking the whole thing too seriously, it’s just a bit of a joke. He kept a record of the original vocal that is now being released on the outtakes CD and listening back he was right.

We recorded a 32 piece orchestra on this track which we didn’t even use in the end, such was the avarice of the era, you can hear the recording on the outtakes disc. Although this song sat neatly with the narrative of the plot, I thought I’d challenge my own rule on this song, I remember the chorus being really emotional, and it still feels like that now. Wide Open Space" became a dance anthem after being remixed by DJ and producer Paul Oakenfold under the production alias Perfecto.Again, ploughing the religious imagery on this track, this song wasn’t immediately a huge hit but seems to be remembered along with ‘Taxloss’ as the most well-known on the album. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of ‘Attack Of The Grey Lantern’, a very limited number of this beautiful vinyl picture disc featuring the iconic roses design, are now available signed by Paul Draper. The title was elongated as it seemed to earnest and this whole track was the most long winded and complicated to finish on the album. The amount of times I’ve sat in pubs trying to explain to people what it’s all about is mind boggling, and in the mists of time, I’m not sure I can even remember myself. I dont have the album in any other format and dont really know it that well so cant compare but compared to my admittedly small collection of picture discs this is comfortably the best.

Can someone create a new listing for this one please as I care not interfere in official Discogs entries, sorry ? This was the earliest song I wrote for the album, you can tell from the lyric it’s from an earlier, more naive me.

This remix was included on Oakenfold's compilation Resident: Two Years of Oakenfold at Cream, as an indicator of being one of the most played songs at major UK nightclub Cream, as well as in nightclubs around the world, over the 1997–1999 period. The album was preceded by four singles, the first of which "Egg Shaped Fred" was released a year prior.
