About this deal

The tripod collar has a long enough foot that it makes a great handle for holding the lens alone, or a lens and body combination. When attached to a DX-format digital SLR, the angle of view is equivalent to that of a lens with a focal length of 300-750 mm in FX/35mm format.

This type of focus hunt I have experienced while photographing birds in flight against blue sky at longer distances. All three copies of the 200-500mm VR I have handled so far had very nice and smooth zoom rings, coming to abrupt stops at both 200mm and 500mm marks. This is good news as there is a guide that says you need a shutter speed the same as or more than the focal length to get a sharp picture (the reciprocal rule) i.

You can mount a TC-14E on the 200-500mm and still have autofocus on most recent Nikon bodies (though it might be constrained to one or a few focus sensors). Yes, it’s a little difficult to get the really wide ring aligned right sometimes as you’re trying to put it on, but I didn’t find that my hood was popping off as others have reported. This is about as big and heavy a lens as I’d want to try that with, and it can be fatiguing very rapidly. That because all the Z lenses have been as good or better than the F mount lenses in the same size and class range. Benefit from unwavering performance whether you shoot wildlife, birds, planes, or fast-paced sports.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. ED VR FX-format lens delivers a whole new level of super-telephoto versatility for sport, wildlife and aviation enthusiasts who want to bring distant subjects closer, with ease. This makes it an ideal option for wildlife photographers who want to capture stunning images without breaking the bank. Photography Life's assessment of the lens' sharpness is consistent with my observations: the Nikon 200-500mm performs admirably throughout its zoom range.

ED VR boasts a zoom-lock switch to keep it secure when it’s not in use, and a detachable tripod foot that helps stabilise the lens when using a tripod.

camera-original 36MP file to explore on your computer (most portable devices can't show all the pixels in the full resolution file). Even though only 9 sensors of my D810 are rated to work at f/8, it works fine when I select any of the D810 sensors manually — but the AF-Area Auto Select mode seems missing. It is impressive that Nikon was able to come up with a constant aperture lens design for such a long zoom lens.We also offer product videos, reviews and image samples to help you to choose which camera or lens is right for you.

However, some parts are made up of plastic, making the lens construction not as rock-solid as pro-grade lenses.

it does what it says on the tin, it's cropping the image by what a full frame sensor would see at that focal length. No image stabilization: Although lighter, you will get significantly fewer sharp shots due to the lack of image stabilization, especially at slower shutter speeds. Although our team at Photography Life has not had a chance to test this particular combination due to the unavailability of the D500 in the US, we have been actively using the lens on camera bodies like the Nikon D7200, D750, D810 and D4S for this particular review. Well probably not if you were to use the latest Nikon with the latest vibration reduction, super fast focusing motors and all the other bells and whistles. Of course that's just me; do what you want; just don't use this lens for years hand-held with the collar in your way.
