You can mount a TC-14E on the 200-500mm and still have autofocus on most recent Nikon bodies (though it might be constrained to one or a few focus sensors). Yes, it’s a little difficult to get the really wide ring aligned right sometimes as you’re trying to put it on, but I didn’t find that my hood was popping off as others have reported. This is about as big and heavy a lens as I’d want to try that with, and it can be fatiguing very rapidly. Even though only 9 sensors of my D810 are rated to work at f/8, it works fine when I select any of the D810 sensors manually — but the AF-Area Auto Select mode seems missing. it does what it says on the tin, it's cropping the image by what a full frame sensor would see at that focal length. No image stabilization: Although lighter, you will get significantly fewer sharp shots due to the lack of image stabilization, especially at slower shutter speeds. Although our team at Photography Life has not had a chance to test this particular combination due to the unavailability of the D500 in the US, we have been actively using the lens on camera bodies like the Nikon D7200, D750, D810 and D4S for this particular review. Well probably not if you were to use the latest Nikon with the latest vibration reduction, super fast focusing motors and all the other bells and whistles. Of course that's just me; do what you want; just don't use this lens for years hand-held with the collar in your way.
