About this deal

I have read a lot of queer fiction, but I have never come across anything that gives the perspective of someone who is 79 years old and has been in the closet their entire life. If I had to compare Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out to something else, I'd probably say it is a bit like the TV series Grace and Frankie if it was more about different generations coming out, but with similar family drama, though with a lot more neat working things out. The bond between Arthur and Teddy is something that stands out in the book, making their stories well-connected rather than two different elements. He’s clearly falling behind Teddy — who, by the way, doesn’t even seem to want the job he’s been given — and he feels he needs to do something to get back on track. This story is perfect for you if you love queer romances and are in need of a great book that you'll finish in no time because of the writing style and story itself.

I can't think of any other story I've read with a coming out story for a character of his age, but it's one that needed to be told. Teddy, having seen this, mutually comes out to Arthur, even as his mother (and Arthur’s daughter) forbids he sees his grandfather again. If you spend your whole time never listening to how your boyfriend’s feelings were hurt by your best friend’s behaviour, is it any surprise you break up?Please ensure that book(s) are sent back unread, in the original packaging and your dispatch note is included. There’s also brought up how Ben’s dickhead ex-boyfriend, who he’s also still friends with, refers to Teddy as a mummy’s boy and somehow this is another charge laid against Ben. I know I am very blessed to have had a good life, but you deserve to have the best life, the one you really want, not the one other people think you should have.

Each chapter alternates between Arthur and Teddy's perspectives, which works well, and you get the expected range of side characters who mostly all turn out to be good people as this is meant to be a happy book (the somewhat of a villain character was very obvious from the start, as you might expect). Don’t miss brilliant fiction every week in the pages of My Weekly, plus reviews of the best new fiction book releases.Teddy, whines throughout, Ben is a pantomime villain, Shaquille (I listened to the book so don't know the spelling) was a sad-eyed, love-sick puppy on the sidelines and don't get me started on the rest of the homophobic locals who have a change of heart when it suits. It makes you think and wonder, it makes you sad, happy, maybe even angry at times, but that rollercoaster of emotions is worth it. Look at the little grandpa in his pink shirt and bowtie and he's bonding with his grandson over coming out as gay!
