About this deal

However, the reality – at least in the context of my specific unit – is quite different from the described attributes. Lastly, for sound, I think where it does fall behind is going to be on just sheer resolution and ultimate detail. I emphasize “relatively” because it’s mostly noticeable in the comparison with the neutral reference like HD650. The problem is that it seems there are some reflections going on in the cups which case that rumble to come across as fatiguing, at least to me.

Additionally, a mild upper midrange dip reduces hardness but can lack air and articulation at times. I personally think that HarmonicDyne have made it difficult for themselves with this set of headphones. Here, it’s much simpler: the ear cups and lower portions of the band are decorated with tempered glass. It’s an odd choice of words, but I supposed semi-open might imply a bit too much in the realm of soundstage. When I want a more intimate presentation, I find they present a full bodied sound that is pretty natural and doesn't stab your ears. Once the issue has been confirmed, we will arrange for a replacement, partial refund or a full refund (where applicable). The Athena only best it with a warmer and meatier sound that feels more like the feeling of warm burning embers than the cooler and more neutral Hifiman sound.

Its build is solid although there aren’t as many metal parts as HarmonicDyne’s prior products (which are all more expensive). Many headphones struggle to balance the spicy cymbals against the rich piano here, but the Athena nails this satisfyingly, if not perfectly. These are the first HarmonicDyne headphones I have tried but I am always looking out for a decent closed back set and if they are budget orientated, even better. At HiFiManiac, we don’t just review audio gear; we obsess over it, and we also believe in the power of collaboration. Music such as Sirenia sounds ethereal, clean and has a good amount of impact, although once again, it sounds best at medium and low volumes.HarmonicDyne also includes a velvet travel bag and a souvenir coin with your serial number in the box. Depending on headphone positioning, your own Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF), and/or variation in headphone units, you may or may not detect the same peaks or dips. The stereo image is pretty wide, and with music which plays tricks with stereo effects, sounds are steered around with precision. The Athena proudly claims to feature a novel driver design with ‘studio-grade tuning’, or at least that’s what the manufacturer’s advertisement suggests.

Most of its headphones have utilized dynamic drivers, and the Athena follows suit, but it applies a unique material composition with the drivers to deliver its sonic signature. e., those light on bass), but for most types of music, I find it somewhat overblown, leaning noticeably towards the boomy side and lacking fine texture. This takes away a lot of presence of vocals and the upper mid range of things like electric guitars, giving the headphones a much more muted and overly dampened sound.

Given the build quality, package, cable quality and overall resolution / sonic presentation, I think Athena is an outstanding value for a headphone in the entry-level range, and it does sound superb, without breaking the bank. Listening: GeneralThe Athena departs from a neutral tonal balance, but the deviations seem to compensate for my ears' reduced bass and treble sensitivity at typical listening volumes. And probably this is the reason why I still perceive Athena’s response as ‘mild V’ rather than flat-neutral. They are marketed as being a “Studio-Grade 50mm Metal-Ceramic Composite Dynamic Driver Headphone” which has a “Studio-Grade Tuning with a tonally balanced sound signature and a 3dB sub-bass boost”. HarmonicDyne has made its global success through several crowdfunding campaigns, including the Helios, Zeus, and Poseidon headphones. The bass is not overwhelming and does not intrude on the midrange, doesn’t thicken the sound too much, and allows Athena to sound very clean and natural.
