At the end of the day, it really just comes down to preference, but as I said, I generally don't use subtitles for the reason above — unless it's a big-budget TV series based on popular IP, apparently. On "The Rings of Power" especially — with its two dozen characters and locations, and expansive mythology — it's helped me be more invested in the series. I doubt it though, their lack of compassion for the deaf and hard of hearing community is shameful, to say the least. Netflix's "Stranger Things" took its subtitles to the next level with season four, with descriptions like "tentacles squelching wetly" that sparked social-media conversation. I have tried holding down English subtitles button as suggested, and gone back to repeat, no such luck!

It is astonishing that they wouldn't do everything in their power to try and meet this minimum expectation with a show of this magnitude. An internal succession war within House Targaryen at the height of its power, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. Subtitles can also get ahead of the audio, so you'll be reading the dialogue before it's said (this is especially annoying when watching a stand-up comedy special and the punch line is ruined). Subtitles can also be helpful if your TV doesn't have the best sound quality (although there are ways to adjust that).

We had now tv about two years ago and could not get subtitles, so we gave up and cancelled our subscription telling now tv why, it seems they do not listen to their feedback as, we thought we would try again and so we subscribed again a couple of weeks ago and lo and behold STILL NO SUBTITLES! Your shows advertised with “S” symbol for subtitles but no subtitles are showing for shows such as, special victims unit, Criminal minds. With a fantasy show like this I like to read the subs because it's quicker to pick up the character names and follow the storyline better. There is still a bug, 15 months and counting, to my knowledge, where the setting on the Stick for subtitles wherever possible won’t stay On.

While watching HBO's "House of the Dragon" recently, I found myself doing something I had vehemently avoided in the past: turning the subtitles on.
