I cannot help but think that this would be best as a lengthy article in a pop science magazine (New Scientist, scientific American etc) than a whole book. He is also an accomplished scuba diver whose underwater videos of warring octopuses have attracted wide notice. Other Minds shares similar personal experiences of scuba diving with cephalopods, but is more fundamentally a popular science book. In ‘Understood’ the narrator describes the complex process of re-imagining one’s place in the world, armed with new knowledge: ‘Slowly, we adjust / our own soft ignorance / unroll our prejudice / in gentle waves.

Audrey Ward * The Sunday Times * Ben chronicles the unfathomable tragedy of his daughter’s death with the profound love and compassion of a bereft parent. Our mission is simple: We work to i nspire wonder of the ocean by educating the world about octopuses. Playing different ball games simultaneously and staying camouflaged when it’s bedtime is eight times the fun – just watch out for the ink. Humans often anthropomorphize everything, where we apply our concept of time and language to other species. We are on the cusp of either destroying this sweet, green Earth or revolutionizing the way we understand the rest of animate creation," she says. A fall at the aquarium heightens Tova’s concerns about aging alone in the beautiful three-level house her father built when she was 8. But if you can swim with it, Van Pelt has spawned a heartwarming tale about the importance of reaching out with open arms to make meaningful connections. As a journalist and author and a young father, I’ve come to seek more vigorously things that make me smile, things I can cherish and appreciate.

By tracing the problem of consciousness back to its roots and comparing the human brain to its most alien and perhaps most remarkable animal relative, Godfrey- Smith's Other Minds sheds new light on one of our most abiding mysteries. She takes the janitorial job not because she needs the money, but because she’s compulsively clean and needs purposeful activity. Combining science and philosophy with first hand accounts of his cephalopod encounters, Godfrey-Smith shows how primitive organisms bobbing in the ocean began sending signals to each other and how these early forms of communication gave rise to the advanced nervous systems that permit cephalopods to change colours and human beings to speak.

The best ones are able to use specific anecdotes of animals and/or humans and use them to guide the reader through into a discussion of the science around the given topic. When we show our heart and share from the heart, this is a sign of true beauty, and this helps us better connect with others. There are some fantastic octopus books out there just for kids that tell some truly wonderful and wacky tales. I hope you find wonderful insights in the books that I have suggested and a new respect for the animal minds that surround us. Nor is this almost photographic ability solely for camouflage; cephalopods flood their bodies with colour according their moods. Kids ages 7-9 will learn a whole lot in this packed book and be inspired to tell all their friends about these amazing invertebrates. By contrast, Aunt Bets has a much more forgiving approach, allowing space for Vinnie to learn and grow.

It makes you realise that just because not all creatures look like human beings it does not mean that they do not possess a soul or feel pain or have feelings, it is a case that us mere humans no nothing at all about the creatures we share the earth with, only that we can kill them and eat them. For octopuses and cuttlefish both, their intelligence has developed not through social behavior like ours, but in solitude.
