My siblings and I like to joke that her husband TPB – The Poor Bastard – developed spontaneous mutism shortly after their wedding and that no one has heard him speak for the past twenty-one years. Despite the novel's flaws, there is no denying that Vermette is a great storyteller- and while I was left slightly underwhelmed by The Break, I'm glad that I read it and I look forward to reading more of the author's work. He still loves her, he’s just taking a break – from their marriage, their children and, most of all, from their life together.

This was a Traveling Sisters group read that I had the pleasure of reading along with Lindsay, Susanne, Diane and Dem.One can only hope that books like this elevates the nation's consciousness to this issue and that better solutions and genuine healing are forthcoming. In so doing she holds the reader’s tender love in her capable hands and weaves us right into the story. Generational Rape is the villain, for the perpetrators are faceless and nameless, and usually men, until in the predictable denouement, we see this villain cross genders.
