It is widely believed that when the body of their father was disinterred from its burial place in Westminster Abbey at the Restoration of the Monarchy and hung in chains at Tyburn, the daughters of Oliver Cromwell bribed a guard, took their father's corpse and had it secretly placed in the family vault at St. Paul's Cathedral as being the greatest masterpiece of that prolific church builder, Sir Christopher Wren. It is assumed that it is the ghost of this young man, affectionately known as, 'Jimmy Garlick ', who has been seen many times in the church. The castle-like Eastern State Penitentiary took solitary confinement to new levels when it was built in 1829. They encountered a man in a naval uniform, who approached one of the women and whispered in her ear.

The institution officially shut its doors in 1996, but the ghosts of deceased inmates are said to still roam the iron walkways today. The site’s most famous ghost is the ‘MacKenzie Poltergeist’ George MacKenzie, who was known during his lifetime as a ruthless persecutor of Scottish Covenanters, a Presbyterian movement in the 17th century.According to the 1989 edition of the Guinness Book of Records, Pluckley is the most haunted village in Britain.
