About this deal

Tries to be romantic and maybe smutty, but also tries to be some kind of adventure, stop-the-end-of-the-world dark story and it just. Hex I belive, means witchcraft or to put a spell on something on our waters however over in the fat U. Johnson's magical world is so vividly imagined that you'll be tempted to believe in witches and spells yourself. There is a ton of heart wrenching tension, lots of humor, and some spice (towards the back half of the book). I think it's contemporary romance, but cottage-y and cozy and has a chapter or so where it dips into historical?

Maybe it’s just that I’m a fantasy girl at heart, who loves world building, but there just wasn’t enough explanations anywhere! The mmc, Josh, was a sad boy from Seattle (don’t worry, you won’t forget where he’s from because it’s mentioned every chapter). That being said, even if I went into reading this totally unbiased, I still don't think I would have loved it. When the handsome and clueless Josh becomes the new landlord of Beldam House, Essie is determined to keep him at a safe distance. When she sits outside crying, Josh arrives and proceeds to whine that the dead old lady should have paid him rent and also was shit at cleaning. Is it magical realism with a monster to defeat or is it a romance between two mismatched characters? It reappears and instead of being "Bees or something" it is now the witchhunter man - except rotted.

It worked perfectly with the village's unique history (which I found thoroughly interesting) and, given the house’s magic (and Essie’s mum, Lilith’s time related abilities) I do hope Johnson utilises both in future books. In 2017 she won Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists' Association with her novel Max Seventeen.

Despite finding it challenging to get into at first, I enjoyed the story and would like to spend more time with the characters. I found this an engaging tale that balanced a lovely romance with fantasy, humour, and some chilling bits. A house that happens to be owned by Josh, who is eager to find it and figure out who is living there to ensure they are paying rent as it doesn’t seem rent has been paid in about 400 years. Set in the charming village of Good Winter, the novel introduces us to the quirky inhabitants of Beldam House, a large and ever-changing mansion.

While reading Hex Appeal I just couldn’t stop thinking this book could have easily been chopped up into three books and be like sevenhundred pages per book - and I would still have liked it. I wanted to like Essie, because she was different, but she was just so whiny and irritating that I couldn’t! If you're looking for a break from smut fantasy with something that's just so lovely and wholesome, I highly recommend it. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Kate Johnson was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and now lives in Essex, where she belongs to a small pride of cats.

Her accents are fun, her voice is clear and honestly, I just want to hear her narrate all of my future audiobooks.

It also has something to do with Siena's baby (which she has accidentally named after the witchhunter) but I couldn't for the life of me care, so I don't really remember.
