Inisrun is a place where everyone’s business is everyone’s business, and the rumour mill is ever-churning. The harrowing subject matter of novels like Only Ever Yours and Asking for It have fuelled discussion around body image, consent, and the complicity of society and social media in the suffering of abuse victims. The victim is one of the community’s beloved daughters – one of three sisters revered from the moment they were born. This book is full of intrigue and intensity, with a really great past and present storyline interspersed with interview dialogue between the documentary crew and the locals on the island. Her first husband inflicted terrible physical abuse throughout their marriage, until she escaped back to the small island community with her son Alex.

It kept me hooked on till the end to see what new evidence the crew will be able to reveal and whether the truth will actually be revealed or get buried again. While this book is not for everyone due to it's content matter, it wasn't for me for other reasons entirely. Once again, the book is spot on in relation to the (not so) subtle ways misogyny plays out in our media and cultural modes of thinking from gendered ageing and appearance ('there were no comments about Henry's appearance, she noticed.Imbued with a strong sense of polemical urgency, her novels have addressed the hot-button issues of the day with brio and fearlessness, but lately the young-adult genre has struggled to contain the ambition of her work — and with this new novel the separation is complete. Years later, he and his wife, Keelin, agree to be involved in the documentary in a desperate attempt to clear their names. My one issue with the book is that initially it does not flow very well with some backtracking and it’s hard to make sense of what’s going on.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. While it may cause others to need to check a word here and there in a dictionary it really added to the atmosphere of the book. After The Silence is a claustrophobic, tension fuelled novel from Louise O'Neill who as ever shows a huge amount of insight about the inner turmoil of women everywhere.I loved the way the story was written, flitting between the present day and the past with some parts told in an interview style. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. On a stormy night ten years prior, a much-loved local girl Nessa Crowley, one of the beautiful, smart and popular 'Crowley Girls’, was killed at a party in their house. Please do not use it in any marketing material, online or in print, without asking permission from me first.

I also really enjoyed how inherently Irish the book feels, through her use of Irish and chapters told from the perspective of the island and its people. When the truth is revealed at the end, it isn’t the big twisty shocker some readers – myself included – would have been hoping for.Mo stór (my darling) is never translated in the novel, but it is used as an obvious term of endearment in context. After facing years of neglect and physical abuse from her father, Laura is rescued by Pam Willis, a social worker. As the documentary makers prod and poke into the Kinsella’s lives, Keelin – now completely alienated from her remaining friends – begins to slowly and silently unravel. There were many aspects that I really liked alongside many that I thought could have been done better or didn't quite work in specific areas.

With shelters refusing to take in a deaf person, Pam bends the rules and brings Laura to her home, teaching her how to communicate and uncovering her true personality.

Social control, church, and even doctors (generally men) made 'leaving an abuser impossible for most women. The main character of the book is 47-year-old Keelin Kinsella who appears to be a complete stranger compared to the woman who celebrated 37 years on the night Nessa was murdered. I also blame the book for making me a bit snarky while I read it, as I just wanted to read and read and not be disturbed.
