And throughout those 70 pages I’m waiting for Batman to snap out of it and take back control, and when he finally does it’s one of those moments where I go, “Yes, here we go! Gotham is evacuated and is sealed off from the outside world and numerous atrocities take place within its confines as Deacon Blackfire consolidates his grip.What follows is a violent and horrific display of how all aspects of Gotham’s society were torn apart by the cult of Deacon Blackfire. Outside some brief hallucinations of the Joker and Two-Face, none of Batman's Rogues Gallery make any sort of appearance, the story focusing exclusively on Deacon Blackfire and his cult.

Nick: I struggle when starting a Jim Starlin book—his dialogue is so heavy and meaty that you really have to be in the right zone to read one of his comics. There should really be only a single reason that matters, and dependability should not factor into it. No amount of preparation, Bat-gadgets or training helped him against succumbing to Deacon Blackfire.With a career dating back to the early 1970s, he is best known for "cosmic" tales and space opera; for revamping the Marvel Comics characters Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock; and for creating or co-creating the Marvel characters Thanos and Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. The art is okay but the colors make it look jaded and a bit boring to read sometimes but you gotta stick it out as it leads to some interesting stuff with Bruce and how he is breaking down and still manages to fight and in the end maybe save his city but we never really got a full origin of this villain. As all men do, when they realize they have been following a false leader, they turn on Blackfire and rip him to shreds. Unfortunately, there are multiple times in the second half of Cult where I feel like I was reading a wikipedia summary rather than really understanding how the citizens of Gotham would fall under the sway of a tyrant. Just in the start a little bit and they never really play the immortality angle and don't explain so thats a missed opportunity.
