I don't know since I didn't live on a farm in the 1960s, but I found the book, overall, to be dark and depressing. Lauder leased the Glenbranter estate in Argyll to the Forestry Commission and spent his last years at Lauder Ha (or Hall), his Strathaven home, where he died on 26 February 1950, in his 80th year. Where Bent Road excels the most is in juxtaposing a seemingly encapsulated world of rural routine and slow pace against the rushing onslaught of violence. Strikingly updated and extended to a high specification by the current vendors with features such as underfloor heating the property still retains a wealth of character and an internal inspection is essential for the property to be fully appreciated.

More literary fiction than mystery, Lori Roy's Bent Road is a fabulous debut novel from an author who has earned her right to be on my permanent radar. In general, inner-city areas show high concentrations of people aged 18-30, suburbs show larger numbers of small children and adults aged 30-50, and rural and small towns are more popular with older workers and retirees. What did bother me was the fact that none of the characters were likable, not even young Evie, and especially not Daniel. Even though there was plenty of suspense to keep me turning the pages, I found that I enjoyed the unfolding details of the characters as much as I did the unraveling of the multiple twists. However the Scott family starts changing unavoidably when Ruth and Reesa are part of the family again.

It’s a story of a complicated family mystery, bound up in a recent, unrelated one, occurring right after a branch of the family move back after being away a long time. There were chapters in this book where I held my breath and had to fight the impulse to turn to the last page to relieve the tension.Frequently, the characters' movements were described in detail when it wasn't necessary and sometimes slowed the action. Figures for economic activity do not include those aged under 16, or those family members aged 16-18 who are in full-time education. Her work has been twice named a New York Times Notable Crime Book and has been included on various “best of” and summer reading lists. If you wish to enquire about a specific property in this postcode, contact the major suppliers, for instance Virgin Media, BT Broadband and Plusnet. The information on housing, people, culture, employment and education that is displayed about Bent Road, Hamilton, Scotland, ML3 6PU is based on the last census performed in the UK in 2011.

This address within the Airdrie South ward showed a higher-than-average concentration of retired residents - 22% of the resident population. Lori Roy’s debut novel, Bent Road, was awarded the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel by an American Author. Overall, I felt like the entire story suffered from the lack of an editor with a critical eye and an appreciation for tight narrative, rather than (than! I felt as if this story could have happened anywhere in the US, yet it was supposed to have taken place in Kansas. Enjoying a fantastic central position in the heart of Hamilton, this two bedroom fully furnished apartment desirable top floor apartment lies in an admired and residential pocket with .While Arthur and their oldest daughter slip easily into rural life, Celia and the two younger children struggle to fit in. I think a large part of my problem is that I read Dark Places recently and this book really suffered by comparison. This odd, dark and often creepy tale of a dysfunctional community and a family that fits right in will keep readers wondering right until the last page.

Don't be fooled by the novel's apparent simplicity: What emerges from the surface is a tale of extraordinary emotional power, one of longstanding pain set against the pulsating drumbeat of social change, a rhythm the Scott family wishes could be ignored but which affects them regardless. Right or wrong, this fact is ultimately what prompts him to uproot his family and move them all back to his small hometown where his older sister mysterious died so many years ago. It has a vaulted beamed ceiling, timber clad walls, underfloor heating, exposed stonework along with a freestanding roll top bath completing the luxuriousness.Lori Roy is the author of Bent Road, winner of the Edgar Award for Best First Novel; Until She Comes Home, finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Novel; Let Me Die in His Footsteps, winner of the Edgar Award for Best Novel; and, most recently, The Disappearing. But Roy is in full narrative command, taking her time to point the reader to the next direction, but always certain – even if we are not – that what comes next is what must happen, not what we hope or wish would transpire. As whole, the UK population claims itself as approximately 86% white, with residents of this area being 99% so. Roy doesn't use one more word than she needs and her ability to generate suspense is impressive, especially for a debut novelist.
