If we are only obsessed with technology and cannot tell a good story, show a good character, a character, then even if we have powerful tools, It's just tangible and godless, unable to make truly great animation works. Full of great drawings and art from the films, it also gives you an inside look at how Walt ran the studio and how some of the most beautiful animation scenes were filmed. It's a unique book, a combination of Disney and animation history, as well as the process of developing an animated film. The book goes deeper looking at how these hardworking pioneers approach animation, invent new ways to animate and bring seemingly inanimate objects, even things like safety pins, to life. I really enjoyed “The Magic Behind the Voices” a who’s who of animated character vocals – and this book on Disney animation seemed like a great follow up.

In 2013, the book's third chapter (which explains the twelve basic principles of animation) was republished in its entirety with the permission of the authors' heirs in the Disney Animated iPad app from Touch Press. While the scans are decent and much of the content readable, this copy, the only copy I have ever seen, is in fact truncated on the sides so that interesting information is lost. Ever since freshman year in college I felt in love with traditional animation, that year I went to library to find books about animation, and I found this huge heavy book, considered to be like the "Bible" for animators, I borrowed that book so many times I lost count. His last full work for Disney came with The Rescuers, in which he was caricatured as one of the film's characters, the cat Rufus. Written by two of Disney's famous Nine Old Men, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, this book goes back to where animation was born, made and enjoyed by people all over the world.

I learned so much about animation, and my head was often spinning when I heard about some of the supreme effort that went into getting a single shot in some of the early Disney animated films. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.I looked through it constantly, and many of the pages still have depressions along the edges of the characters where I traced them. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.

It is more designed as an insight into the mysteries of animation for the lay person, with more than enough to inspire and inform any potential animator. The most complete book on the subject ever written, this is the fascinating inside story by two long-term Disney animators of the gradual perfecting of a relatively young and particularly American art from, which no other move studio has ever been able to equal.
