The story begins with PA Hedgehog explaining to his children about the problems that hedgehogs have in crossing the road to get to the park. This book plays with language brilliantly and children would find it amusing and possibly difficult to understand to begin with but after one explanation they would really enjoy this book.

Many of his stories are inspired by his farming experiences, the children he taught, his large family and numerous pets. They will explore features and the purpose of these through examples of non-chronological reports, including reports on field mice and red squirrels. He crossed the road, but caused a big accident and then at the end he crossed the road by the lollipop lady and crossed safely. I would recommend the book Hodgeheg because it is silly with really funny characters that keep me entertained and make me laugh. On one of his attempts he gets a bump to the head by a cyclist which results in his words all mixed up when he tries to speak - and he becomes a "hodgeheg".

In this series of 6 lessons, packed with the Hodgeheg activities, your Year 2 class will look at some examples of non-chronological reports about animals including field mice and red squirrels, and explore the features of this genre of writing.
