At Wooburn Green, we understand that being able to read is the most crucial skill that we can teach our children as without it they will find it increasingly difficult to access other areas of the curriculum and their life chances will be significantly reduced. However, for some children it may be best for them to be part of the main lesson and then work with an adult. The programme includes weekly lesson plans and planned assessment materials to help achieve a constant pace of learning and is designed for the teaching of all children in a mainstream setting. All children have daily opportunities to read a variety of material in school, including regularly with an adult. Purchasing your books from Badger Learning means they will arrive in school fitted with free protective jackets so your new books will last much longer.

The progress in the phases seems much more regimented, so I think we’ll be “stuck” on stage 4 for quite a while…. Any child with a SEND, who would struggle with cognitive overload from the pace of the Rapid Catch-Up programme, is assessed on the SEND assessment and the best SEND pathway and planning is selected for them accordingly. This will be taught in a fun multisensory way and may well involve: writing sounds/ words, songs, actions, pictures, puppets, writing giant letters in the air, using different voices, moving around the room, treasure hunts.Positive attitudes to reading and choosing to read have academic, social and emotional benefits for children. The six modules take around five hours in total to complete and can be done a module at a time if required. Children need to read books in a progressive sequence until they can decode unfamiliar words confidently.

You can use these with your child at home to help them with their pronunciation of phonemes and recognition of corresponding graphemes. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. Our Little Wandle SEND Programme has been developed to be used with the graduated approach to teach children to learn to read in small steps that provide the right amount of challenge. The 7+ books in the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised series are designed for children aged 7+ who need more practice to acquire phonics skills. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme begins in the earliest years with the Foundations for Phonics programme, which we deliver to our Pre-School children.

I too don’t really like the uncertainty of this being a new scheme not directly comparable with the old book bands as it’s harder to choose what books to read together at home of a similar level. As far as I can see, the 7+ books look to just be the same phases but aimed at older kids (ie more age appropriate content for kids with a lower reading age than their age). It maps the Little Wandle books to the old reading bands which gave me some assurance all is going ok.

By bidding on, or purchasing this item, you are agreeing to us sharing your name and address details with that 3rd party supplier to allow us to fulfil our contractual obligations to you. We teach letter formation using our formation phrases, which make a link between the mnemonic and the letter. All children no matter their attainment level are included in the lessons and we use ‘Keep Up’ interventions to make sure no child falls behind. This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. For example, we have seen whole class teaching work well in schools with a high % of EAL children where word meaning is taught as blending and reading are taught. We understand that all children have different abilities, and some pupils may struggle with reading and need more specialised texts.

Every adult at Wooburn Green is trained to deliver Little Wandle phonics and reading to ensure that phonics and reading are delivered in the same way in every year group and by every adult. This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’. Using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised with SpLd children will be more about what exact conditions a school is working with. Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. From September 2023, Little Wandle introduced a Phonics and spelling programme Year 2 consisting of daily lessons.Little Wandle is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, which provides high quality planning and resources for the teaching staff. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! We recommend that international schools contact our membership team in the first instance to discuss your requirements. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
