About this deal

Despite the low yields from its small grapes, it plays a big part in the blends used for ports, and is increasingly being used for table wine. Members of the Primum Familiae Vini group of top family producers worldwide, they are one of the world's leading producers. As is customary with Tawny Ports, this Fonseca 20-year-old undergoes a remarkable transformation during its extended ageing period.

Over 70% of the Port wine sold by Symington brands is produced from grapes grown on their own properties. Port wine is a Portuguese fortified wine produced with distilled grape spirits exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. On the nose, it shows an excellent bouquet with a characteristic ‘nutty’ character and delicious mature fruit with hints of orange peel. uk accepts no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products by manufacturers or other third parties. The Port has spent significant time aging so that the fruit is a little less dominant and in balance with the barrel notes.

The grapes that are used to make Port must be grown in the mountainous Upper Douro region of Northern Portugal, the world’s first officially demarcated wine region in 1756. We love the toffee/vanilla orange rind nose; the attack is opulent and complex offering up spicy, nutty, fiery, tea flavours with a delicious mellow vanilla finish. The unique flavours that are the hallmark of Portugal's indigenous grape varieties have become its trump card.

Their Douro wines include the Altano range, Quinta do Ataíde in the Vilariça valley in the upper Douro, and flagship Chryseia, which along with Post Scriptum and Prazo de Roriz, are produced at Quinta de Roriz in a joint venture with Bruno Prats, ex of Château Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux. This is deliciously delicate with pale colour andhazelnut, cinnamon, orange peel and dried apricot flavours – made from a blendof on average twenty years old cask-aged tawny ports. The area also benefits from late-afternoon breezes which favour the production of fresh, food-friendly whites and increasingly popular sparkling wines. They too have been involved with Port and the Douro for many generations, with ancestry dating back to the mid-17th century. It’s an exceptional Tawny, combining rich aromas of figs and raisins with a smooth and silky mouth feel. The extra years of wood-ageing softens the colour of Aged Tawnies and give them greater complexity and their typical nut and raisin characteristics.

This transformation is symbolic of the wine's evolving character, as it becomes progressively smoother and mellower with each passing year. Kopke, a house specialising in aged tawny and aged white ports, is the oldest established port producer, in existence since 1638. Like the 10 Year Old, the 20 Year Old is bottled when ready to drink and will not improve if laid down in bottle. The wine produced is then fortified by the addition of a neutral grape spirit known as aguardente to stop the fermentation, leaving residual sugar in the wine. While a few shippers have experimented with Ports produced from a single variety of grapes, all Ports commercially available are from a blend of different grapes. Nutty, smoky and complex, paté or farmhouse cheddar are good pairings, or it'll also go well with sweets like pecan pie. I also got the 10 yo (purely for comparison purposes of course) and this 20 yo has a much greater depth and variety of flavours. This is the master blender’s quest for perfection, capturing the perfect balance between young and aged port wines being matured for over 20 years in seasoned oak casks that contain 543 litres of port, only being released once they have reached perfection. In the 20 Year Old tawny, the fruit has mellowed further than in the 10 Year Old, and the spicy, nutty aromas of ageing are more powerful and intense. It is created from a unique blend of reserve old cask aged ports that are matured in Taylor’s cool and tranquil cellars, known as lodges, in Oporto on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. It is an excellent accompaniment to many desserts and can also be enjoyed with some fruit dishes, especially strawberries. Our team are passionate about wines, and are happy to help you find a tawny that suits your taste preferences and budget.
