Put simply, it all started as an extended essay that I wrote in my last year of the International Baccalaureate diploma programme that I later decided to translate into a fictional narrative during my first year of university. A second-year History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh, Claudia is also one of the youngest published authors in Scotland. Nigerian history is something that I am greatly passionate about and looking through a degree programme that makes little mention of Nigeria sparked a burning desire in me to fulfil my passion through writing historical fiction.Efemini thoughtfully uses diary entries and letters to create a lucid and intimate account of Asaba's censored micro history. Onome is an international student from Nigeria studying law at King's College London whilst Chioma lives in Asaba, Nigeria. Efemini’s passion for history, her heritage, and shedding light on the Asaba massacre of 1967, is evident throughout the pages of A Letter Away From Asaba. It is a book that I wrote during the course of my first year at Edinburgh and I am still quite shocked that it will be transformed into print next year. Efemini does not refrain from straightforward and unapologetic honesty, transporting the reader with the courageous voices of Chioma and Onome.

To all the young Black girls wondering if you’ve made the right decision, or pondering on whether you’ll fit in at Edinburgh… I hope you see yourself in this podcast, and above all, I hope it brings you some comfort! I am looking forward to joining the team of incredible student journalists to contribute to the production of cultural pieces for the newspaper during the course of my exchange year at McGill. My book is a historical fiction novella that seeks to inform readers about the censorship of the tragic Asaba massacre of the Nigerian civil war. This work has left me inspired and hopeful that young voices will not allow history to remain neglected under the chronicles of British colonisation. With her recently published historical fiction novel, A Letter Away From Asaba, The Edinburgh Tab had the pleasure of interviewing her about her book, inspiration, and writing process.

Fast-forward to today and I am set to publish a book dedicated to the Asaba massacre, seeking to respond to this gap in scholarship and global awareness. I am thrilled to announce the book cover for my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ designed by Quinthia Nsema. It is one of the more interesting words in the English language, in that its connotative meaning can be either very negative or very positive. A Letter Away From Asaba' is an account of the Asaba massacre during the Nigerian Civil War woven into a fictional narrative. I am happy to share that I have been offered the position as Culture Editor at The McGill Daily, an independent student newspaper at McGill University that has been in operation since 1911.The podcast host Claudia Efemini, author, history undergrad and dear friend asked us questions that really challenged Esther and I to reflect on our experiences at The University of Edinburgh.
