But I so enjoyed “13 Minutes” I wanted to give her books another chance, in case “Behind Her Eyes” was a fluke. I used to check her phone occasionally, when I could, but now she uses a passcode, and as much as it pains me to admit it, she deserves her privacy. But when she gets word that her sister has been killed in a very similar scenario that their parents died in, she has no choice but to go home to Grey’s Hollow, take care of her sister’s two children, and figure out what truly did happen to her.Lisa knows that the only way she can protect herself and her daughter is to face her fears, and she’ll need her friend Marilyn’s help to do this. Like the author’s previous novel Behind Her Eyes, this one also contains several surprising and game-changing twists, often accompanied by significant shifts in the storytelling. So when I heard Sarah Pinborough was appearing at the June First Monday Crime event in London, it was the perfect opportunity to make amends. Again, similar to Behind Her Eyes I thought I’d put my finger on what was going on, and in one respect I had guessed something about one of the characters – but I was again completely caught out in terms of the overall plot. I honestly thought I knew what each of the secrets was that they are trying to hide from each other but at least one of them left me completely thunderstruck at the end of Part One of the novel.

It reminded me of Robert Dugoni’s novel, My Sister’s Grave (in the best of ways), which I enjoyed just as much as I did this.There are hardly any witnesses to the final act, the witnesses’ credibility should be questionable to the police, and even if the police have no trouble seeing the light there isn’t much to witness. When mythologies fail me, I like to compare Leigh's writing to a fine bourbon, smooth, mellow but with a definite bite. This one’s about a woman who goes back to summer camp where her friends went missing years ago, and new disaster strikes.
