But then one day, that calm is shattered when Lisa comes across a terrifying discovery left for her to find.

But I so enjoyed “13 Minutes” I wanted to give her books another chance, in case “Behind Her Eyes” was a fluke. Marilyn loves her best friend Lisa, which motivates her to help Lisa even after discovering that Lisa was hiding some major secrets that violated the BFF code of ethics. Then Ava performs a sudden, heroic act at a local festival, saving a small child from drowning in a river. I used to check her phone occasionally, when I could, but now she uses a passcode, and as much as it pains me to admit it, she deserves her privacy. But when she gets word that her sister has been killed in a very similar scenario that their parents died in, she has no choice but to go home to Grey’s Hollow, take care of her sister’s two children, and figure out what truly did happen to her.Lisa knows that the only way she can protect herself and her daughter is to face her fears, and she’ll need her friend Marilyn’s help to do this. Like the author’s previous novel Behind Her Eyes, this one also contains several surprising and game-changing twists, often accompanied by significant shifts in the storytelling. So when I heard Sarah Pinborough was appearing at the June First Monday Crime event in London, it was the perfect opportunity to make amends. Again, similar to Behind Her Eyes I thought I’d put my finger on what was going on, and in one respect I had guessed something about one of the characters – but I was again completely caught out in terms of the overall plot. I honestly thought I knew what each of the secrets was that they are trying to hide from each other but at least one of them left me completely thunderstruck at the end of Part One of the novel.

It reminded me of Robert Dugoni’s novel, My Sister’s Grave (in the best of ways), which I enjoyed just as much as I did this. There are hardly any witnesses to the final act, the witnesses’ credibility should be questionable to the police, and even if the police have no trouble seeing the light there isn’t much to witness. When mythologies fail me, I like to compare Leigh's writing to a fine bourbon, smooth, mellow but with a definite bite. This one’s about a woman who goes back to summer camp where her friends went missing years ago, and new disaster strikes.

Now this may come as a shock to many of you as I have a reputation as an on-the-ball crime blogger to uphold but this is the first book I have read by Sarah Pinborough. Then her daughter rescues a boy from drowning and their pictures are all over the news for everyone to see. They have a good relationship and their lives seem happy enough in terms of friends, work and school. She doesn’t use social media and has been happily toiling away in the same job for years, between her daughter, Ava, and her best friend, Natasha, she has all she needs. She wants to live like a normal teenager—chill with friends, go to swim practice, study for exams, have a boyfriend. Jodie is only five foot three, but she’s all muscle, lean, angry, and boyish in her swimsuit, and Ange has the curves.

Sarah Pinborough is a New York Times bestselling and Sunday Times Number one and Internationally bestselling author who is published in over 30 territories worldwide. twisty, decade-spanning, multivoiced thriller, everyone has secrets: teenager Ava; her mom, Lisa; and Lisa’s best friend, Marilyn. I absolutely loved the fantastical Behind Her Eyes and although this one’s more normal (well that’s debatable but it’s not fantasy anyway) it’s brilliant in its own genre.Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to our sites and/or other sites on the Internet.
