However, for some reason, when the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky five of the classmates, including Nicole and Blake, gain powers that allow them to control one of the elements each.

Today’s book is “ The Elementals” by Michael McDowell, one of my favorite authors who I don’t feel is remembered or recognized as much as he should be—so we’re all going to do that now. The only thing that jarred with me was McDowell’s attitude towards Odessa, the main African American character. For the last two characters, Chris and Kate, I’m just going to combine them into one paragraph as they were the smaller main characters of the bunch. Espero no tener que ira a ninguna mansión antigua para no recordar lo que sucede en la ominosa tercera casa de Beldame, en donde los Elementales acechan para enloquecer, aterrar y matar. When compared to the modern state of the horror genre he's much more subtle, taking his time to build suspense, tension and atmosphere. And there is plenty to admire in "The Elementals," a story that has accumulated dust in more ways than one!

India is twelve, which is probably the perfect age for someone to front up to supernatural activity. The way he changes certain words to emphasise the character's accent was excellent and really brought a southern flavour to proceedings. To enhance that pleasure, I read it with a group of horror lovers over at Goodreads and we had a ball! Michael McDowell is just one more example of how this moralizing trend throughout history, only to remember those who “fit” better with the story of our past, is tragic. The story begins with the funeral of Marian Savage, the matriarch of an old and opulent family from Alabama with an intriguingly peculiar and disturbing burial rite.Soon after, being that it was summer, most of the family head to Beldame for their summer vacation, which is the same place Marian had just succumbed to cancer and died. As the story progresses we learn more about the Witches, and discover that they are in fact descendants of Greek Gods, and that is why they have their powers. There were streetlamps and neon signs and uncurtained windows, car headlamps and a haze of red reflected light that covered New York from sundown until dawn.

The Savages have become so traumatized by the events they've seen in the third house when they were young, that they perform this ritual as a why of feeling safe. It helps the reader to stay engaged in the story, rather than feeling like they’re just reading words on a page. After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. However, with newfound insight gained from Odessa—in a genuinely grotesque manner of power transference, I’ll spare you the details here—India manages to help herself, her father, and the remaining family members to escape Beldame. She was definitely my least favorite, not because her character development was bad, but more so I just didn’t like Danielle’s personality. As the series goes on, their relationship does make some changes, however they still maintain some form of a relationship throughout the entire book.

Find out in The Blood of the Hydra, and join the Elementals on their mission to save the world – or die trying. I just finished reading The Elementals this morning and wanted to open up a general discussion about the plot and also on some theories I have about what really took place. I was a bit paranoid of spoilers so I decided to read it AFTER I finished the book and I agree with all he said on descriptions. As a Greek mythology nerd, I would give this book a solid 10/10, but for someone who may not be as into mythology or simply doesn’t have enough time on their hands to read a 700+ page book, they may rate it differently.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.
