First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British high street, pairing the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with an engaging text by architectural historian J. The window is lined with oyster shells to show that pearl fishing is one of the most important uses of diving apparatus. A superb, near fine copy, showing only trivial wear to the spine ends and corners and a prize label (to Paul Sharp) to the front pastedown, in a very good glassine with a couple of minor chips and two closed tears. Sir James Richards (1907-92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years. copies of the book were printed, and doubtless more would have followed, but unfortunately the world had other ideas, with the original lithographic plates being destroyed in the blitz, which resulted in the original editions becoming extremely sought after. Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver, and he remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. The specialist, whether selling cheese or stuffed animals, still has an important role to play, and in London particularly whole streets of independent businesses continue to prosper. M. Richards, was eventually published by Noel Carrington, brother of the artist Dora Carrington and editor at Country Life Books.

This is followed by two illustrated essays, "The Making of High Street" and "High Street at Seventy" by Powers and Russell, respectively. He made detailed annotated sketches on the spot, from which he later drew edited versions with simple, incisive pencil lines, and eventually transferred them to lithographic plates. Small bump to bottom corner of front cover, otherwise fine in fine card slipcase (apparently most copies were issued without the slipcase).The Maidstone Press reprinted the original images and text for this stunning new edition which includes essays by Alan Powers and James Russell as well as many other illustrations relating to the original book.
