Description

OrCam doesn't identify when you're pointing at graphic or picture; it simply doesn't recognize these elements on a target. To begin reading from a sheet of paper, you simply hold it in front of you, tap the touch bar, and let OrCam snap a picture and begin reading. On a more serious note, I was on at least one occasion embarrassed by OrCam's insistent announcement that a man was in front of me when, in fact, it was a woman.

Yes, I could ask someone to go through them, but in the grand scheme of things it was never massively important. International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions. Stuart, I am very appreciative to you as the Optelec ClearView + HD 24 has made a big difference in my life.OrCam prompts you if the text is upside down or too blurry to recognize, and seems to do a good job cleaning up off-center images.

However, I don’t believe this to be a barrier as you can still accurately find what you need just by pointing the OrCam Read at the text you want to read. The developers of OrCam have built their own, proprietary text recognition engine from the ground up. With that said, the small size of the device along with the use of a touch bar might present a challenge for anyone who has dexterity issues. To learn a face, you hold down on the touch bar while the subject of interest turns their face slowly one direction, and then the other. Unfortunately, several sighted people in my community were under the impression that I was testing a device that actually allowed me to see. It can read any printed or digital text instantly, without requiring an internet connection, and is the only wearable that is activated by an intuitive pointing gesture. Please note that it is not an obstacle detector and is not intended to replace a guide dog or a mobility cane.

Turning the device on was easy, with the product verbalising it was setting up, and in no time at all I was using the product to read any text I could get my hands on. Multiple image sets can be taken, if, say, you want to add the front and back sides of a box, but this will count as two items toward your maximum of 150.

With lockdown still limiting normal life, I do believe there are loads of potential benefits that I have not yet experienced. Orientation - Identify objects in your surroundings (including doors, chairs and more), allowing the user to simply ask “What is in front of me? Due to the camera you are able to capture a whole page to translate, with physical and digital text being recognised. If my finger isn't pointing directly at the PowerPoint display it tells me, 'There's more text to the right. Although I like being able to identify money with OrCam, I find it much faster and less awkward to use the MoneyReader app in conjunction with my iPhone 8 Plus.

The makers of OrCam are constantly innovating and improving their technologies to make life easier with low vision. For more information and a demonstration, check out this short video by The Blind Life on the “Hey Orcam” feature.
