About this deal

I had not heard of Fredrik Backman, although I gather he’s written some bestselling novels, one of which is soon to be released as a film.

It is with profound sadness that Marcia's son Charles and family, her many friends and literary agent have to tell you that Marcia died on June 30th. Amongst the hostages there’s a caring elderly woman, a middle-aged married couple, a young lesbian couple, one of whom is quite heavily pregnant, and an older, single woman who is either obsessive-compulsive or autistic. The plot is fairly minimal, which is fine - I like character-based stories, and Marcia Willett has quite a gift of characterisation. I’ll give nothing away except to say that generations interact, couples misunderstand each other, old resentments and annoyances intrude - but the overall feeling is mellow and accepting. But Sally, unlike the wise, intuitive person she becomes, is a morose, withdrawn person in this first book of the series.

The bad guys also work on Dossie, who runs a small catering company and cares for her elderly parents. It’s supposedly for horse-riding enthusiasm, so they want Peter (Petronella) to take a look at the three horses they have already, and maybe look at advising them on getting some more. In the summer I went away for six weeks, and since this is a large book I didn’t take it, but read something else on my Kindle. Those who prefer action-driven books, or those with a lot of clear plot may find this slow-moving or dull, but for those of us - and it included most of the reading group - who love character-driven books, I would recommend this highly. Husband decided he needed a haircut on Thursday (the day when ‘his barber is at work; he’s semi-retired) and as he (the barber) is off to Australia for a month-long holiday to visit his son who lives there, husband thought he’d better get his hair cut otherwise it would be very woolly by December.I was challenged several times to let go of my own inhibitions, defence mechanisms, or need to argue a point of view.

In this one, church and Christmas services are natural places to go, and the minister is a respected friend. She and her husband had been having a difficult time and selling her book to America made a huge difference to their lives. I need those these days (not because bad stuff is happening at home)–there’s so much discord in the world I like to escape into them sometimes.

Fliss must go to Hong Kong with her husband, although that means that she must journey a long way from her home. She also wrote four books under the pseudonym "Willa Marsh", and was published in more than sixteen countries. It didn’t matter at all that I had read the fill-in that follows, although if I had been reading for the first time there would have been spoilers. My only slight irritation with this book is the last paragraph which feels a bit trite, although I suppose it was typical of the era, tying everything up neatly. The window is now decorated for Hallowe’en but, again, difficult to take photos because of the reflections in the windows.

I’ve just about run out of books by my usual authors to read and in looking for new authors, I found Marcia Willett from reviews on GoodReads. He is waiting now for an angiogram which should give the consultant a clearer idea if any other procedures are necessary, but overall, he does feel very much better. I hope you like having a new fridge, but I hated parting with our old one which lasted for many, many years, from when we arrived here in 1985 until about 9 years ago. There’s no explanation as to why they spent so long in the first form, or why one or two of their former classmates have already progressed to the third form. She displayed the courage and stoicism I associate with many of her more mature characters, one of whom states that ‘old age is not for cissies! TOTNES author Marcia Willett, who died aged 76 in June, was best known for her books set in South Devon.
