In this book, Paul Strathern, the award-winning novelist and expositor of complex ideas, unravels the dramatic history of chemistry through the quest for the elements. Born in Siberia as one of anywhere between 11 and 17 children — biographical accounts differ, as infant mortality rate in the era was devastatingly high — he was immersed in tragedy from an early age.

Even though Strathern prose is pleasant and the content interesting, I prefer the former more direct approach. In the Prologue, Strathern sets the scene in Mendeleyev’s country house on a cold winter’s day of February 1869.I’ve always been interested in the history of sciences, arts and literature so I quickly got a copy of it. The title is slightly misleading as there’s only 30 pages dedicated to Mendeleyev but I’m not complaining since I found his story to be one of the most boring ones from all the other scientists.

Where there were missing elements in his early tables, Mendeleyev postulated that these represented elements not yet discovered. A few of the intervals began with a certain regularity, but then the pattern just seemed to peter out.

Empedocles was to die when he leapt into the crater of Mount Etna, in an attempt to prove to his followers that he was immortal. Though it was not really a one man invention, Mendeleyev puzzled all the pieces of previously discovered elements and brought them together - to answer old question 'What is the most basic element of nature?
