An avid supporter of horror art and illustration, Aron has made it his standard to hire illustrators for every book that he puts out himself under his brand AB Horror. This one will stick with me for a while because the things in this book happen daily to people and ultimately get passed over and ignored and that to me is what is truly horrific. This is about a relative of one of the victims taking matters into his own hands and discovering who's really behind the challenge. But little does he know, Derek is willing to go to even greater lengths to get the exposure and revenge he seeks! There are never truly happy endings with tales like these but somehow I felt peace and closure with the final chapter.

A story about a very scary and real issue on the Internet, it's such an amazing tool but it's also such a scary and dangerous one. Do y’all remember, before the internet, that people thought the cause of stupidity was the lack of access to information? It also offers a truly terrifying insight into the predators that lurk virtually who readily capitalise on the vulnerable for their own deviant ends! The chase between the antagonist and protagonist left me at the edge of my seat the whole time and that ending just came completely out of nowhere! Modern Hysteria is an extreme horror, so definitely not for everyone and not my usual preferred subgenre. Aron's work I usually love because most of his output at this point is so comicly over the top with how gruesome the pictures that he paints are and how many taboos he chooses to break.

This was a good read and I enjoyed it but more over I enjoyed the fact it highlighted the online prey on children's vulnerabilities. This book had me on the edge of my seat and it’s yet another great book that Aron Beauregard has created from that amazingly messed up head of his. Donning the guise of the eerie Mr Boy, the disenfranchised youth go about the challenges set forth culminating in their deaths. I'm not going to give anything away since I went in blind and it was fantastic, although I will say be prepared for one helluva brutal ride as we follow Derek into his own personal Hell and back.

And the most surprising thing I learned was that there are actually no laws that protect people to this kind of online abuse. An avid supporter of horror art and illustration, Aron has made it his standard to hire illustrators for every book that he puts out under his brand AB Horror.

It brings to life the true horrors out there in life, of a world reliant on social networking and the need for acceptance! Take Oliver from Yellow or Henry from Sew Sorry or Vera in Son of the Sob and now Derek from Modern Hysteria. I remember the Momo sensation and my own son had his run in with it as well, at least he was too young to fully understand the gravity of the situation and was simply scared of the images he found alone enough to tell me about it. As a parent, this particular novel greatly affected me, as it’s an all too real possibility in this day and age where it feels like most of the population lives on their screens.

The things our children are viewing on the internet is always a cause for concern, especially some of these new challenges that seemingly sweep across this generation of kids, on a regular basis. It also made me think about how society, social media, the web all gives a sense of invincibility in the way that we are allowed to sneak and hide and look at disturbing things even commit disturbing acts and if done correctly we don't have to take any responsibility for the things we do or say because we feel protected and justified in our actions because we have a video or a screenshot. Upon hitting rock bottom, Derek becomes obsessed with pulling back the curtain on the malevolent mastermind responsible for his brother’s gruesome demise. Derek Pearson is a struggling graphic novelist whose younger brother took his own life after becoming ensnared in The Dropout Challenge. Modern Hysteria is one of those books that just makes you angry every single page as you know it could be all too real, while also being pure fiction. If you are a parent, dig deep into the dark recesses of your mind, as you watch your child happily engage on their internet connected device that you feel is so safe due to those “parental controls”; consider what you fear they may encounter the most and what influence that may have on your precious child.
