last but not least, the plot.. too many things were happening at once, and at the same time, nothing was going on. this book had SO MANY TROPES and i could never figure out where this was all going. guess i'll never find out because i dnfed the book 🤪 but to name a few, this had enemies to lovers, rich girl/poor boy (in the past), rich boy/not-so-rich heroine (present), heroine working for the hero, age gap, PENPALS (?!), etc. the penpals plot was by far the worst of all. how very convenient that these two have been messaging through an app for three years, sexting, saying "I love you" to each other yet never meet 🤨

This book was everything I needed. It was extremely well written and engaging. Honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it. I fell in love with everything and am heartbroken that this was standalone because quite honestly I would give anything to read more about Nash and Emery. They have this intense enemies-to-lovers energy and chemistry. And although the journey was long and angst-filled it was worth it to see these two characters get their happy ending. Also, it was amazing to see them grow. Judge Aubrey said: "You had steel toe cap boots on. She described it as being excruciatingly painful and thought you had broken her jaw." Her father, Gideon Winthrop had made a wrong business decision and went into debt, hereby having him lose his company. He went into hiding and abandoned his family. How would he not hide after making a lot of the citizens of Eastridge broke, and having told them, Devious Lies, while they believed in him? what a man! Emery Winthrop needed help. I have been waiting to meet Nash Prescott and the it was totally worth the wait. This book, the first in the Cruel Crown series is so good, it will keep up to finish the listen! Originally best friends with the brother of Nash Prescott, Reeds Prescott, Emery Winthrop later became a victim of her father’s nonentity. She didn’t deserve to be poor and needy in my opinion because she was not condescending to any of the kids that she grew up with while her father was on top of the world. I honestly went into this one completely blind and was fully hooked. There’s so much amazing dialogue and so many feels! Just so many incredible moments and quotes, many twists and turns, and so much swoon-worthy stuff! Bam, hooked, obsessed with this book and this story! And the epilogues!!!! Ahhhh you know how much I love a good epilogue, and this one has two amazing ones. She needed a job, and she landed herself in Nash Prescotts company, unknown to her at first. The only thing that was on Nash’s mind when he learned that Emery Winthrop sought a job in his company was revenge. How to make her suffer for the sins of her father. He hated the Winthrop family to the bone, and he considered it fateful that Emery Winthrop had landed in his nest.
