Despite it’s high octane emotional outbursts, May Sumbwanyambe’s drama is not without its humour, mainly from the down-to-earth Annie — grumpy, gallus and garrulous, Catriona Faint takes it all in her stride. This victory affirmed that Scots Law could not uphold the institution of slavery in Scotland, a ruling that would make a profound contribution to paving the way for the abolition of slavery in Scotland /Britain.

I remember watching a film called Amazing Grace about William Wilberforce about the passing of the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act, which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire. What I know is at that point in history, it was so complicated that there was lots of people so furious about that – it wasn’t a triumphant moment. It was almost like a defeat. But the walls of Ballindean do not keep secrets - their affair unsettles Lady Wedderburn, whose bitter loneliness is only deepened by the close bond her husband has with Knight. Joseph will endure bondage no longer. What happens when Joseph's dreams clash with those of the man who owns him? What becomes of us all when past brutalities bleed into our present realities? When enough is used with an adjective and a noun, two positions are possible but the meaning changes. The production is both gigantic and tiny in its scale – filling the auditorium with a relatively tiny footprint. Particularly arresting is the courtroom, transformed in a second by Jones, where Knight’s fate was sealed. Despite its heavy plot, there are moments of real light in this otherwise difficult play. As King and Thomson kindle a friendship, moments of genuine relief for the pair mirror the position they would have undoubtedly been in. It pays off showing these less dramatic moments in rounding off the characters assembled before us. Rachael-Rose McLaren embodies the unloved wife of Wedderburn, turning to stomach-churning acts of self degradation to grasp the attention of her husband. For his part, Matthew Pidgeon spits insulting prose deftly. The twisted aristocrat crumbles as the play progresses and Pidgeon commands deadly silence as this unfolds.

Sumbwanyambe previously wrote The Trial of Joseph Knight– a drama focussing on the trial and its case, which was broadcast as a radio play on BBC Radio 4 in 2018. People saying essentially like the country had been taken away from them, there was too much immigration, etc. Omar Austin brings a degree of stature and pride to the role of Joseph, with Matthew Pidgeon lording it around in a range of emotions as Sir John. Rachael-Rose McLaren gains all the sympathy as the ever-suffering wife Margaret. Enough of Him feels custom-made to fit the stunning studio at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, where the show makes its press debut. Fred Meller’s set is extended as if by magic with Emma Jones’ lighting. Joseph Knight is portrayed in the play as a man of empowerment to reflect the role he played in helping to change history. He’s been using an analogy of capitalism with his actors in terms of trying to get underneath John Wedderburn’s skin and understanding how he might have seen himself as a ‘good’ person. Actor Omar Austin, who plays Joseph, said it was this relationship which gave Knight the determination to fight for his rights. He was then taken from Jamaica and brought to live at Ballindean estate – halfway between Dundee and Perth.
