These experiences are crucial to our understanding of what it means to be human. They also unite us with our mammalian cousins and even the colossal lizards that once roamed the earth.”

Adrenocortical carcinoma: An adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a cancerous adrenal tumor that forms in the adrenal cortex. It sometimes causes excess hormone production. Several other conditions and factors can cause anxiety. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider if you’re experiencing anxiety. What causes hormonal imbalances? People assigned female at birth (AFAB) have two ovaries — each located on both sides of their uterus below the opening of the fallopian tubes. In addition to containing the egg cells necessary for reproduction, the ovaries produce the following hormones:Humans, like other animals, are biological creatures and our behavior in any given situation is determined by our biology in combination with the situational factors. This is a fundamental fact, yet even today many seem to think that biology doesn't matter – that we are products exclusively of nurture. Some even get offended by the suggestion that hormones affect not only muscle mass and reproductive cycles but also our behavior. This book is an antidote to such nonsense!

Dr. Henry’s laboratory has made major contributions to the understanding of vitamin D metabolism, particularly regulation of the production of the active vitamin D hormone by the kidney. She pioneered the use of cell culture systems to study renal vitamin D metabolism. A related area of research focus is the regulation of gene expression in the kidney by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. In addition to peer-reviewed research articles, Dr. Henry has authored chapters for the books Vitamin D and Handbook of Physiology, as well as the chapter on “Vitamin D Metabolism” for this Encyclopedia. Man... I Feel Like a Woman’ A Trans Woman’s Oestrogen Therapy to Treat Gender Dysmorphia by Kacey de Groot Being a PHd in her field, the author obviously knows her stuff and it is clear that she has put in so much effort into the studies done on campus, for research and purposes of this book. In my opinion, it was well written, and appealing for the average reader who doesn't have to also be researching in science, but simply wants to know more about their hormonal cycles. The reason I've given 3 stars however, is for the sole reason that she never returned to her initial argument about women's hormones and making decisions (i.e the article on Hillary Clinton being "hormonal") -- Yes women do get hot tempered, tired/fatigued. or moody throughout various stages in their cycle- I can attest to this myself. However, what makes some women exceptional, smart, strong leaders/not so swayed by these hormones as others? Her research in this book does focus on arguing that women have estrus- a hormone that many female mammals (except humans) have that increase their receptiveness, attractiveness, and perceptiveness regarding fertility. But again, I wish it went into more depth about the role of hormones in the workplace and how it impacts a woman's career.Anthony W. Norman received his A.B. from Oberlin College in 1959, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1961 and 1963, respectively, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Following postdoctoral work in Paul D. Boyer’s group at UCLA, in 1964 he joined the Department of Biochemistry at University of California, Riverside, as an Assistant Professor. From 1976 to 1981 he served as Chair of the department and currently holds a Presidential Chair and is a Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Norman has also been active for some 25 years in medical education on the UC-Riverside campus and at UCLA through participation in the UR/UCLA Program in Biomedical Sciences, of which he was Dean and Director from 1986 to 1991.

Some hormonal imbalances can be temporary while others are chronic (long-term). In addition, some hormonal imbalances require treatment so you can stay physically healthy, while others may not impact your health but can negatively affect your quality of life. What conditions are caused by hormonal imbalances? When the author tries to be more "scientific", she cites what she perceives as examples of behaviours that seem to prove her point. But we face the problem of confirmation bias here: when people unconsciously select data that support their views, and ignore data that doesn't. And when data that is at most ambiguous, is also claimed as supporting their existing position. For example, if you have low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism), your provider can prescribe synthetic thyroid hormone pills. If you have growth hormone deficiency, you’ll likely have to take injections (shots) of synthetic growth hormone. Adult-onset growth hormone deficiency: Adults with growth hormone deficiency often report having anxiety and/or depression. Hormonal acne (adult acne): Hormonal acne (adult acne) develops when hormonal changes increase the amount of oil your skin produces. This is especially common during pregnancy, menopause and for people who are taking testosterone therapy. Hyperthyroidism: If you have hyperthyroidism, it means your body has too much thyroid hormone. Excess thyroid hormone speeds up your metabolism. This can cause anxiety, in addition to unusual nervousness, restlessness and irritability.

Acne: Acne is primarily caused by clogged pores. While many factors contribute to the development of acne, hormone fluctuations, especially during puberty, are a significant factor. Oil glands, including those in the skin on your face, get stimulated when hormones become active during puberty. Your body uses hormones for two types of communication. The first type is communication between two endocrine glands: One gland releases a hormone, which stimulates another gland to change the levels of hormones that it’s releasing. An example of this is the communication between your pituitary gland and thyroid. Your pituitary gland releases thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which triggers your thyroid gland to release its hormones, which then affect various aspects of your body. Your gut (gastrointestinal tract) is the long, connected tube that starts at your mouth and ends at your anus. It’s responsible for digestion. Scientists are currently studying the hormones that your gut makes and their effects. These hormones include: Your liver is an essential organ and gland, performing hundreds of functions necessary to sustain life. It’s considered part of your digestive system, but also produces hormones, including: Darwinian feminism respects our biology and fully explores it. Women have the right to understand the history (herstory?) including the evolutionary history that has shaped our bodies and minds. We need better information about our biological and hormonal natures.”This powerful and timely collection shines a light on hormones and their relationship with our bodies, our lives, our selves and the stories we tell to make sense of it all. We would recommend So Hormonal to anyone with a body.’ – Authors Abigail Melton and Lilith Cooper Overall, I found myself going “wow, that’s a crazy thing our bodies and hormones do without us knowing!” several times when reading the book. There are also certain studies and findings provided about men’s behaviours and “hormonal intelligence” and how those interact with female hormonal intelligence. Chronic hormone-related conditions can have several different possible causes. In general, the main conditions or situations that cause medically significant hormone imbalances include: Thyroid disease, including hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels) and hyperthyroidism (high thyroid hormone levels).
