I read everything I could find on mineral sunscreens to start research for this piece, and I gleaned valuable information from top skincare experts. I spoke with outdoor enthusiast and dermatologist Dr. Keith Roby, who is passionate about preventing skin cancer. I also interviewed Dr. Deanne Mraz Robinson, cosmetic dermatologist and chief medical officer of Ideal Image, as well as cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos. We each followed the same steps to test the sunscreens, applying approximately 2 teaspoons of each to an arm and a leg. After applying, we rated each product for the following criteria: ease of application, feel, finish and scent on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). We reapplied 2 hours later and rated each formula on that, too.
What We Love: The formulation includes natural ingredients that are safe for sensitive and acne and rosacea prone skin. The rule of thumb is to look for SPF 30 or higher. It can be easy to forget to reapply sunscreen after going in the water, so you’ll want to make sure you add more sunscreen after two hours or 80 minutes in the water.Athletic activities — regardless of whether you’re playing beach volleyball or hiking Machu Picchu — will likely cause you to sweat, so you’ll want a water-resistant formulation. La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen, Melt In Milk Lotion Face and Body Sunscreen - SPF 60 or the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion are great options. What We Love: The oil-free lotion feels extremely lightweight and breathable, but still provides strong coverage at 60 SPF. Chemical sunscreens sink into the skin and work by absorbing rays of sun like a sponge. They tend to have a lighter formula than their mineral counterparts, with less risk of a white cast. However, the strong ingredients can be irritating to sensitive or acne-prone skin. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin , although , according to a 2000research paper by Dr. Pinnell, it's slightlyless white than TiO2. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often. First, select a sunscreen that is labeled as 'broad spectrum'. "Broad spectrum means it will protect against UVA rays, which age the skin, and UVB rays, which burn the skin," explains Dr. Hartman. "Look for a minimum of SPF 30."
Anyway, it doesn't matter if it reflects or absorbs, Titanium Dioxide is a pretty awesome sunscreen agent for two main reasons: it gives a nice broad spectrum coverage and it's highly stable. Its protection is very good between 290 - 350 nm (UVB and UVA II range), and less goodat 350-400 nm (UVA I) range. Regular sized Titanium Dioxide also has a great safetyprofile, it's non-irritating and is pretty much free from any health concerns (like estrogenic effect worries with some chemical filters). Speaking of damage, MDSolarSciences’s products are all fully recyclable to diminish their negative impact on the environment. However, despite being labeled as a fragrance-free sunscreen, we definitely noticed a scent that we were not too keen on. While it won’t irritate your skin, your nose might require some getting used to it.

On average, sunscreens last for three years before their ingredients start to lose their potency.
